View Full Version : Uniforms
What uniforms do you have to wear (if any). At our camp, we're given 3 gray t-shirts with the camp logo on them. We must wear them at all times (or any other shirt from the camp). We also have to wear a nametag at all times.

we are a uniform camp where the campers and counselors have to wear uniforms every day. on girls side, we have to wear white, blue, or grey clothing w/the camp logo on it or solid white, blue, or grey clothes. on saturdays and sundays we have to wear a blue logo staff shirt with grey shorts. the boys do it the same but w/red and grey. we are also allowed to wear any shirts that we've accumulated from camp...counselor shirts or shirts from being in the oldest age group at camp, or color war shirts. i love uniform. it makes getting dressed so easy and limits clothing competition, and the camp looks GREAT dressed in all uniform. the kids have to buy all of their uniform stuff, but we get 2 staff shirts of each color each summer, and thats usually enough considering all of the times we can wear solids.
I wish the staff at our camp got as much variety as you guys. We only get two types of shirts: one plain gray one as I mentioned above and another one with some added designs on it. Oh well.

We get a staff t-shirt that we have to wear on opening and closing day, as well as a name tag and khaki pants or shorts. The rest of the week we can wear whatever we want to wear... as long as it's camp-appropriate!

You're lucky that you get to where whatever you want most of the week. The only time we're every really allowed to wear non-uniform clothes is when it's cold/raining and we bring in a jacket or hoodie to wear. Oh yeah, during spirit week and color war we don't have to wear our uniform (only if we follow the theme of the day for spirit week or wear our color for color war). The only thing we always must wear is our nametag. I have no problem with that.

Yeah, I love being able to wear what I want - I'd get bored wearing the same clothes/colours all summer long... I like wearing crazy colours! I work at a girl scout camp, though, and I think most girl scout camps only have counselors wear uniforms on opening and closing day.

as staff we were given a white polo with the camp logo on the wear on opening, visiting and departure day. we also had a long sleeved top to wear whenever. the staff and campers had the option to order camp clothing and wear it when they want, along with the tons of normal clothes they bring every year!!

Well, I work at a boy scout camp so I have to wear a boy scout uniform. During check in it's the class b staff polo. During the week, its just a class b(scouting t-shirt, shorts, belt, socks, and a hat if you want.) During Dinner and special occasions like visitors night its Class A(button down BSA shirt and all of the other stuff from the class B)

Do they provide the uniforms or do you have to buy them? The boy scouts may have them, but for people that work there who aren't boy scouts do they have to buy uniforms?
A blue t-shirt with the YMCA logo in the top left corner and the words Y-Outdoors Staff on one of the sleeves.
I missed out on the jacket as I wasn't there on the day they were handing them out, and because it was still winter when I started, I'd wear a brown long-sleeved thermal underneath with a blue camp beanie and my own blue/black tracksuit pants or blue/black shorts.
Overnight camps I don't have to wear it all the time, but I do when I work from 9-5.

We don't wear uniforms, but we do get a free staff shirt that we're supposed to wear on the first and last days of each session, so we can be picked out from the campers. They get uglier every year (the shirts, not the campers).

We aren't required to wear any uniforms. We get one staff shirt at the beginning of the summer that we have to wear during change weekends, when old campers leave and new campers come, and for cabin photos once a session.

day camp last summer was a staff shirt every day... at the end of the 8 weeks i hated those shirts.. we got 5 of them... it did make it easy to get ready in the morning.. the only thing i hated was it said staff in red letters and you couldn't wear pink shorts because it clashed.. hahaha..
the other gs camps i worked at you could wear whatever you wanted (appropriate) except on change days when you had to wear you staff shirt.. sat/sun.. i like that sooo much better.
Our shirts are plain gray t-shirts with a gray logo (except for the special shirt which changes every year). So you can basically wear anything with that.

Staff shirt, staff tie, name tag, and khakis (pants or shorts) on all Opening and Closing Days. We also have clothing items available for purchase in the trading post - sweatpants, sweatshirts, and several t-shirts.

We are given a blue staff shirt to wear with khaki shorts when the kids arrive and a green tshirt to wear with jean shorts when they go. We also have two weeker t-shirts, these basically are a t-shirt saying Sandyhill Camp which we had to wear when we go out of the camp with the kids on the trip. This year these were orange - bright orange :S) but we wear them to go to Six Flags :D

YAY for no uniforms. We have to buy 2 camp t-shirts that r really nice to wear on arrival days...3 times a summer...and thats it. Although, like me, many of us chose to buy other stuff with our camps logo and name on them just cause they r usually really nice and comfy. I wear my stuff yr round. Other than that we dont have a uniform for camp and neither do the campers.
I wear my stuff yr round.
I wear my camp shirts year-round too (well, when it's warm enough to wear short sleeves).

Our staff ties (traditionally) are about an inch in width - they are a colored cotton print that matches the staff shirt and are tied in a Friendship Knot on the ends. Nametags, pins, etc. can all be attached. Is that what you were thinking of or an actual tie sort of thing? :)
I love my staff ties. I have one from every summer I've been at camp - the summer I missed, the staff actually made me one and sent it to me.

I love my staff ties, too, and one of my favorite rituals every summer is transferring my pins etc from last year's to this year's... I always leave one behind, A to hold the friendship knot together, and B when I'm ready to let that particular memory go. When I was a CIT, my CIT director gave me a pin that her CIT director had given to her; eventually I gave it to one of my former CITs.
The funny thing is, once I've transferred everything and worn it once, I've avoided wearing my staff ties like the plague. They get in the way.

We are given the standard staff shirt and a retro staff shirt (it changes every year). We have to wear it on both opening and closing days and on any out of camp trips. Sometimes they will also make us wear them for all camp events. We also have staff IDs and those have to be worn at all times.
There are times when I wish our campers and/or staff had full time uniforms but when we have dress up activities the campers are not allowed to access the costume closet so it's a lot more fun if their have their own belongings for theme day fun stuff like 80s day.

At the start of the summer we're given 6 white tee-shirts with the Camp logo on.
We have to wear these at all times from breakfast through to evening shower. (Just before dinner) - after which we're able to wear camp appropriate clothing.
Due to high demand, the camp also got some Vest Tops which we could buy - these were great for the stupidly hot days, and further helped to balance off the tan on the upper arm.
We had to carry a Nalgene at all times, for our own health, and in the interest of positive role modelling.
And in the Senior Village we decided during Orientation that our piece of uniform would be a fanny pack. The local Rite-Aid soon ran out.
Looked quite good at lineup though all the staff appearing with our fanny packs !

The only time our campers have to be in any type of uniform is photo day where they need to have a green echo lake tee-shirt.
Other than that the campers are free to wear whatever.

Addendum - we also needed the campers in Echo Lake-wear when ever they went off campus on trip.
---
I didn't have a problem with us as staff having to wear the tee's - as staff it gave us a sense of identification, and with so many prospective families touring site during the summer morning and mid-afternoon I can imagine it looks good from the outside looking in.
Most campers tended to bring "uniform" tee-shirts anyway for wearing around camp, but it never turned into a fashion contest when ever they didn't - even amongst the girls! - and until it becomes such a contest I can't see a problem. Provided we're getting the campers to their activities equipped and dressed suitably, everything seems to work.

That's how it is at our camp as well. Staff must always wear their uniforms, but campers only have to wear it on photo day. I'm actually glad it's like that because it makes getting dressed a lot easier. :P

thats exactly the reason we are all uniform...to stop it from becoming a contest at all. we saw the beginnings of it...kids bringing REALLY expensive clothes to camp and wearing them not just for socials but every day, plus kids were starting to bring 3 or 4 huge soft trunks and its not fair to the kids who have less stuff, space wise.

At my camp we have to wear a staff shirt on the day the kids come, and on the day they leave (it's just so parents know who's staff). Also, when we have BBQ's where donators are there, or at open houses, we have to be wearing the staff shirt just for the event. They sell hats, which we are told to wear, but it's not enforced.
Campers never have any uniform. They sell camp shirts with the logo on it, and many campers have an extensive collection they wear for the 10 days, but it's not a uniform, and they don't have to wear it, or buy shirts. For pictures and the end banquet, they get showered and dressed in "nice clothes" (which varies from anything clean, to a tux or grad dress).
I LOVE MY CAMP!

Solid color collared staff shirt on opening day. Closing day is the same colored shirt only it's a t-shirt instead. We can wear whatever shorts we want with it, and we can wear sandals and such. I usually wore athletic shorts or jeans depending on the weather. We had certain days when it was suggested we wear a camp shirt, but it could be any camp shirt -- which gives quite a selection when you have 3 shirts each year, plus camper shirts and such. Rest of the week it's whatever we want to wear!

I think that all camps should give the campers one shirt. I know we do. I see kids all the time wearing our shirts outside of camp. It gives you a walking billboard..
Our camp gives each camper one t-shirt. They can purchase more though. They're really only worn on picture day but some kids wear them just about every day.

On Sundays we have to wear our blue polo shirts with the camp logo, and khaki shorts. On Saturdays we have to wear khakis and our staff t-shirts. During the week we have a dress code we have to follow (shirts tucked in, one piece bathing suits, etc.) but not uniforms. We do get a lot of other camp clothing that everyone loves to wear though--t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, ec.
