My name is Michael, and I am a new camp director in the City of Grand Prairie, TX Parks and Recreation Department. I just wrapped up about a month ago with camp, as I was thrown in to this job right at the beginning of June. I previously worked in Special Events and wanted to get back in recreation as soon as possible. Well, I survived the summer, although this was after I went home everynight for two weeks when I first started thinking I wasn't going to make it.
I began my job this past June as stated before, and recently had a 3rd recreation center open in our city, and most of the staff I was going to oversee went with my predecessor to the new facility, so I had to hire all new positions. It was a stressful time, but all in all was the most rewarding thing I could ask for, especially because I was able to do what I wanted, and new minds were joining my team!
All in all, summer camp went great, I did feel though after evaluating the summer that the camp seemed to be repetitive each week and not a whole lot of new programming was taking place. I decided to get my act together and to initiate the planning process for Summer `07, I needed to get on these forums to network. I am so excited to meet other professionals around the country, and I now have an enthusiastic staff I know will be great for next year. I look forward to getting to meet other members of TalkCamp Forums and if anyone is in the general D/FW area on here, I would love to hear from you.
