Don't be offended.. Just curious... Are either of you from an area that is highly populated with Jewish people? Honestly, I'd never heard of any type of religion camp, other than Christian, before TalkCamp. :speechles (And I'm of no religion, so I'm not.. biased or sucked into my own religious world, or anything). Maybe Jewish based camps just aren't popular in Canada? Any explaination to this?

I think that there are all kind of different camps pending on where you are.

That's true. It seems there are a lot of Jewish-based camps in the northeast US.

K.... So then, as I understand it, correct me if I'm wrong.. is that it depends where you are? I'd be willing to bet there's a few Jewish camps around the Toronto area in Ontario.. There's a few Jewish communinties in the GTA, which is what I'm thinking. (Now I'm just babbling.. )

Aaaaand.. does anyone know of any other religion camps? Buddist, Islamic, Hindu, Islamic - camps? This is facinating me! Usually I get frustrated with anything religion, but this is interesting.

I've never heard of any other types of religious camps other than Jewish and Christian. I'm sure there might be a few out there though. They have camps for everything these days...

Well, I'm from Canada too, but I work in the US. And no, Newfoundland is far from highly populated with Jewish people (like, there are literally 7 Jewish families in the province). It was explained to me that for Jewish people, going to camp is a rite of passage that all kids are expected to experience.

I did a little research, and there are a few (like.. I found 4 Muslim camps in the entirety of USA). So, they exist, but few and far between. I would guess it's the same deal as with Jewish camps.. They exist in highly populated areas of that religion. Mystery solved.

Socks< I had to laugh when I read this. Off the top of my head, I can think of no less than 18 Jewish camps in Canada... If you want a list ofthem, let me know, LOL. But I think because a lot of the north american Jewish Population is situated along the NorthEast coast (Toronto, Montreal, New York, parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and smaller communities in Chicago, Atlanta, etc), these camps tend to be situated close to this part of the country.

b) 18 isn't a lot... I don't know if you were implying it was or was not a lot..
c) I don't want a list.. but thank you. I don't plan on going to any religion camp. Ever.

Ya, until i started going to this board I had no idea there were so many Jewish camps. But I also live deep in the heart of the bible belt and the Jewish population here is very very small, as in I don't think I know any Jewish people that live here. I've learned a lot about Judaism since i've been on these boards and it's really interesting because I've never been exposed to it before. I'm glad we have such a diverse group to pull ideas from here!

the jewish immigrants in the early 1900's actually sort of "invented" modern american summer camping. most jewish kids in communities in the US, especially in the northeast, attend some sort of a camp at some point in their lives, but the most common are 8 and 4 week camps that date wayyy back w/a ton of tradition. many kids go to the camps that their grandparents and parents went to. it's part of a way of life for us.

i dont know if this has been discussed yet but there are TONS of jewish camps in places other than the already widely discussed eastern camps---- texas, the south(georgia, north carolina, south carolina, florida), a bunch in californa, and a big ole chunk of them in mid amurika(ie wisconsin, minn, illinois, missouri)

:-D

Lol I keep finding these threads and reopening them ;)! That last comment was back in August!
Well I work at a Baptist camp and love every aspect of it! Im actually Pentecostal but we seem to believe pretty much the same as Baptist! Thats still Christian I know but it seems such a broad term! People say they are Christians sometimes even if they just go to a church at Christmas and Easter and do nothing else the rest of the year!

Kiwi -- ME TOO!!

Anyway, both of my camps (yes, i have two now - WOO!) are not really based on a religion. I can't speak for my new camp, but my regular camp (which I have been attending/working at since I was 4) we do a flag ceremony EVERY morning and afternoon and we say grace before EVERY meal (since I was 4 until now). Maybe it's because we're in the bible belt, but there has only been one problem with it and that girl was allowed not to participate in these two traditions. The point of all this being, that we are not based on Christianity, but we do say grace before meals (AND use the word God/Lord/etc.)

I have only ever worked at Girl Scout camp, but the two I worked at in Utah were very different than the two I worked at in Virginia. In Utah, the campers and staff were 80% Mormon. Because of this, there are some unique circumstances to consider. A lot of them will read their Book of Mormon every night, and are especially sensitive to swear words (even words most people don't consider to be swear words like "butt' and "hell" and "that sucks"). Some have a hard time relating to non-Mormon campers as many of them have never had a non-Mormon friend before. It's a good lesson in celebrating diversity.

There are also a few Mormon resident camps - like your typical Christian camp, but for Mormon girls (one is called Brighton camp). Mormon boys usually do Boy Scouts and most Mormon girls (12-18) attend church camp with their local church group for a week each summer at random locations.

Ours is a Church of the Brethren camp. It is an old denomination that many have never heard of, but very related to the Mennonites, and we have a longstanding church camp tradition. I work at a camp that my mother went to in the 40's and we still do a lot of things that she did, like swim in the river, and we sing a lot of the same songs.
