Letters from Camp is a series of fictional letters from 'Camper', an eleven-year-old writing home to his parents about his first summer at camp. He is in the youngest unit, aged between 10-12 years old.
Hey Dad,
On Wednesday we had the play! Each Unit has to perform their own play, and ours was called ‘Westerly Ways’, which is a Western (could you guess?) all about Big Bad John Clay, who is a bandit but learns how to be a good man, and becomes the town’s sheriff. I was a Bandit too, and had a line to say and a dance to perform. Alan in my bunk was John Clay and did really well, he had a great bad guy accent!
All the counselors got on stage too, in costumes, except Pete who was sorting out all the music for the dances and Simon who was making sure people got on and off stage at the right time. Lots of people were cheering at the end, and came up to us at the end and saying how they liked it. Then, we had a party in the Canteen and got to eat Spongebob Squarepants ice cream, it tasted really cool, and may even have had real sugar in it!
I suppose all the excitement went to my head, because the next day I had to stay on Pete’s Porch, where we go when we’ve not behaved very well. I got mad at Tony, because he was making fun of my line in the play, so I got angry and tried to bite him. Simon was not happy with me, and sent me to Pete’s Porch, where he and Pete talked to me. I had to stay there during Trampoline and Hockey, and think about what I did. I had to apologise to Tony too, just like you make me at home, but I did mean it this time. It has still been a good week though, I will miss being at camp.
I’ll see you in two weeks (or as Kev and Simon say, a fortnight!)
