View Full Version : Jokes
This may be sound mean, but have you ever played jokes on your campers? Who hasn't? One of my favorites was always the toast joke. You tell them to say toast ten times fast. Then ask them what you put in a toaster. They'll say toast. The answer's really bread. Toast comes out of a toaster. I'd trick them every time with that one. :laugh2:
What jokes have you played on your campers?

That's funny! I'm gonna have to try that one the kids this next summer! it should be funny.
It works best with younger kids. They'll fall for it easier. That's a tip just in case you decide to work with older kids. ;)
I love things where you do an action, and ask them to copy it exactly, like Bunny Whoops. Make sure to tell them if they know it, then to not tell anyone, and stand in front of the group with your left hand up in front of you with the palm facing you. With your right index finger, you touch the fingers on your left hand starting with your pinky. Each time you touch a finger, you say “Bunny”. When you get to the “J” between your index finger and thumb you do a slide (just like a ski jumper) and say, “whoops” then touch the thumb and say “Bunny”. You then do the same thing in reverse.
Basically it sounds like the following – Bunny, bunny, bunny, bunny, whoops, bunny, whoops, bunny, bunny, bunny, bunny. When you are done you cross you arms.
You then get the group to repeat the exercise to see who was paying attention to detail, and when they have it, have them either quiet, or get them to stand up and demonstrate to the rest of the group with you. Keep on doing it until everyone gets it - trust me, it takes them ages to get that last action!
A smiley face drawn in the air with your left hand is another similar game.

We call it the train. I did it as a camper and then again as staff when we wanted to have fun w. campers. It only works on metal frame bunk beds so i can no longer do it. You get a very powerful flashlight and you shine in on the victims face. you have a person keep wispering the train is comming. as a few others are shaking hte bed and making train noises. the victim will wake up and panic. Its mean i only did it once as a councler but many times as a camper. Another prank we play on the kids is tell them there is some sort of monster at the bottom of the lake and keep saying that it kills misbehaving kids.

One time me, another counselor in my bunk, and two of our kids were on a paddle boat in the middle of our lake. We started telling them that there were alligators in the lake and that they loved to eat people on paddle boats. One of them almost started crying. We had to go back to shore because we didn't want them to have a panic attack or something.

...like Bunny Whoops
I love that game, but we call it The Johnny Game :) I also love the Triangle game, where you make a triangle and have people guess whose triangle it is. And the stick game! There's so many "mean" games like that, hehehe

ahhh you guys are horrible!!! the only "tricks" we ever really play on our kids are when we tell them things about color war that aren't true...especially that there is no color war this year haha. everything about our color war is a secret that even a lot of the counselors (the ones that aren't "in" the war) don't know so we'll be like "ok i'll tell you who the counselor chiefs and what the themes are, but you guys have to promise not to tell ANYONE" and then we'll rattle off some fake stuff lol. or we'll just tell them that there is no color war, just like in 1947 (or any other year for that matter). i got a ton of kids to believe that one one time...until an older camper came over and said "wait...1947...that was the summer my grandma was camper chief!" silly 3rd generation campers haha.
It's a good thing the kids in my bunk had a good sense of humor. They'd laugh whenever I told them jokes like this. Unfortunately, one time when our division head was doing something with a microphone, she let one of our kids talk into it (who was a troublemaker to begin with). Well he said something that could have offended some people. She made him apologize. Luckily she didn't question us.

Here's a joke some of my campers played on their tentmate my first year as a counselor... They were going to wait until she fell asleep, then carry her bed outside and put a "For Sale" sign on her. She woke up while they were carrying her, but it would have been funny.

There are so many "jokes" that have been played on campers. i think one of the most entertaining was during our SOS week. SOS stands for save our students and a lot of the campers dont come from the best of backgrounds. during that week we visited 3 different colleges/universities in the morning. then around lunch we came back to camp and did camp activities. At our first college we were on a tour of the campus. one of the counselors had brought a soda with him and started drinking it. i was walking with him and another counselor at the back of the group when a camper came up to us. he asked the one guy where he got the soda. he started telling him that there were sodas stashed all around campus. under things like rocks and stuff. and sometimes the came up through the ground. and that is just wasnt this college but all colleges have them. thats how he knew where to look. the camper bought it! we've also convinced campers that this guy from the netherlands and this other guy from the US were brothers. there was this whole story behind it. all sorts of funny stuff to do to campers....regardless of there ages!

:speechles I told some kids at my camp something very similar! One day we got some extra cans of soda from the lunch room. Well some of the kids asked where we got them, and I told them that there was a soda tree in camp, where cans of soda grew just like leaves. They believed it and would always be looking at the trees to see if there were any soda cans there!

We usually like to play jokes on other staff rather than on the campers. I was on admin. staff this summer and we always play jokes on one another. The best one this summer was played on all of the people in my cabin, including me. Some of the other admin. staff waited until we were asleep and then came in with a bunch of alarm clocks and set them to go off at 2:30am, 2:45 am, 3:00am, etc.. They put them in random places all over the cabin so we would have to get up and look for them. It wasn't funny when it was being done because we had to get up every half hr. but ti was funny looking back on it afterwards. We alwys play random pranks on one another, guess it's one of those camp traditions.

FAKE OUTS for olympics...the kids don't know when and where it's going to BREAK OUT. so much fun is had with that
Last summer, when our boys were misbehaving a lot one day, we told them that we told our division head how bad they were behaving and that she said to make them do cheerleading. Well they believed it and for the rest of the day behaved so well because they didn't want to do cheerleading. Finally when it came time to go to "cheerleading", we told them that our division head said they behaved so well she changed her mind. Boy were they relieved!

I had a camper this past summer that had a run in with some of the geese that made a home at camp. She was on her way to the infirmary to treat a bee sting & tried to cross over the bridge over the creek but the geese chased her off of the bridge. The poor thing was in hysterics...but soon calmed down.
Towards the end of the summer it became a running joke about her & the geese. So one of the last nights of camp some campers & I rigged a goose above the girls bed so that she would see it when she woke up. It worked & she was screaming b/c it scared her...but then she started laughing like mad!
She was fine with the joke & we still tease her now
 That's a funny story Courtney! We have a small petting zoo at our camp and it's so funny to watch the kids get scared of the animals when they walk up to them and they make a noise! I laugh every time. :P

some staff and I t-ped the kitchen. It was really funny since I worked in the kitchen as well as being a counselor, to see the kitchen staff's faces. I held a straight face but everybody knew it was us somehow.

our waterfront director likes to play jokes on everyone. one time he figured out a way to suspend the director's table from the rafters at breakfast...there was just a sign on the floor that said "look up" when she walked in and when she did she saw her table hanging there...that was greattt.

I just have to say that some campers are so Gullable!!! But some counselors take WAY too much advantage of it! But sometimes it can be pretty fun to mess with them, one time I convinced a bunch of boys that these certain types of leaves were what our salads were made of and they were all eww I am never going to eat camp salad again! It was hilarious!!

I just thought of one. When I was a counselor our executive director had gotten a dirt bike and he would drive it all around camp. We got this great idea to steel the bike and hide it in camp. So the last night of camp we took his bike and put it on our raft in the middle of the lake. Also, all of the campers thought it was great. He did not. He told us no paychecks until we got his bike of the raft with out a drop of water on it.
He was so mad but it was so funny.
I hope that my staff do not try anything like this to me. But I am sure that my day will come!

As a camper we duct taped one of our friends to his mattress while he was asleep (he took sleeping pills cause he was an insomniac so it was easy). We draged him to the lake and placed him in a row boat. W/O oars. the OD at the time found him about 15 minutes later, it was hilarious cause he woke up when they went to get him.

As program director, I have pulled pranks on our staff. One time I went over to one units sleeping areas. They were staying in the basements and it has rafters. So I took all the staffs stuff and tied it all up to the rafters. Shower caddys, shoes, duffel bags, etc. It was great! But then the next morning when the director and I went into our office, it had been rearranged and everything was upside down and TPed and our office chairs were upstairs on the porch of our lodge.
We don't involve the campers in pranks unless they do the prank as a unit to another unit. Like one summer, I supplied a group of campers with lots of TP and they did quite a number on their counselors tent.

ok whats a snipe hunt?
This past summer I told my kids that a giant snake lived underneath the camp and would come out at night and eat people. Whenever there was thunder, or some kind of roar, I told them that was the snake jumping out of the ground. They'd get so scared!
One time our senior counselor had leave early one day. For some reason we didn't tell the bunk. So they started asking where he went. Of course, I told them the snake ate him. They got so nervous! When he showed up the next day they all asked him about the snake. He figured we told them he got eaten by the snake so he played along. It was the funniest thing!

There is no such thing as a snipe.. You just get you kids all exiceted about going out to find somthing that is made up. It works great with a group of boys. When I was a counselor I used to talk my kids out every night looking of them. It got them tired and they thought it was great to be out with me. After a few days you have to make sure that you find ways to make them want to keep going!
