so some of our camps have camp names... i know mine does! so what i want to know is if your camp has a camp name what is it and how did you get it?
i will start things off...
my camp name is petri (like from the land before time) and i do something a little different i keep the p on my name lower case. i got my name not from camp but from middle school basketball. everyone was giving each other nick names and the one catch was the nick name had to end in a "y" sound (smily, ducky, blondie, etc.) well i got the name petri because like the one in land before time i always fell down...when i went to camp and i had to pick a name i decided to keep it. i thought about changing it but decided against it now i would pick any other name in the world. i also have a few nick names off of my nick name such as pete (most commen), petey, peach tree, peaches and probally a few more
i cant wait to hear all your stories!
Last summer my camp name was Donkey Kong because of my initials (DK). One time one of my kids asked my what my initials were, and I said "DK as in Donkey Kong." Well, it stuck. He started calling me that name and it caught on. As a side note, the kids on my school's bowling team actually called me Donkey Kong first because of my initials, and also because I can throw the ball so fast (we call that the "barrel"). That's where I got the idea to say that to the kid.
The year before, the kids just called me by my last name. That was interesting because that's what most people in school call me.

My camp name is JellyBean. When i was little my parents called me Jenni Bean, so thats where it came from. It's shortened to JB most of the time at camp, but even at school and home i have a few friends who think its fun to call me JenniBean or JellyBean. Camp names become so much of who you are, i really couldnt imagine being called anything but JB at camp anymore.

Whimsy
05-01-2006, 10:26 PM
My camp name is Whimsy. It came from my dad's love of the Home and Garden channel. I don't know how many of you watch it, but every single day you will here them describe something as whimsical. So eventually my dad and I would start shopping at Goodwill or Value Village for something whimsy that we could take home and add to our house. so when the time came for a camp name it just felt right to be Whimsy.

My camp name is "big worm", because one of the parents in my cabin said I looked like the guy "big worm" from the movie Friday. I don't think so, but it just kind of stuck. Its cool!!!

My camp name, which was created 2 years ago at Guide camp, and is now only used within Guiding (as my Guiding name), is Willow. At precamp 2 years ago, we were told we had to pick our names. Everyone was choosing things like "cookie monster" and "sneezy" and "goofy", etc. I thought that was just not fitting to my personality - to pick a Disney/cartoon character, so I didn't. I went home and asked my friends. My friend Gecko (that's.. what we call her - it's not a camp name, either) and I were watching episodes of Buffy the Vamp Slayer obsessively, and I got the idea from my favourite character, Willow! And it's just stuck! I would never use a different name!

At my camp we do camp names but we do them a little bit different then everyone here. First off, we are not allowed to pick our own camp name. It must be presented by another staff member and then you can accept or decline it. Names are always given during our pre-camp, that way everyone has a name when the kids arrive. The kids are there for 10 days and never know our real names. We have a song we sing at final campfire where we tell them our real names.
Camp names stick and are used year round if the camp group gets together. My Camp name is Beady, and I was given that name because I was sorting a whole bunch of beads before the kids arrived. A staff member walked by and said "Hi Beady" and it stuck. It's almost like an alter ego when I go to camp. I love it.
I wish I had a better story but I do love the name.
shermanator

My camp nickname is shermanator. Most of the kids call me by my last name which is sherman but if you were to ask about the shermanator they would have good stories to tell you about the crazy things id od and my enthusiasm and spirit for camp.

My camp name is Eagle because my mom is pyschotic and when I first got my liscence she used to make me call her and she decided that I was eagle and she was huston. So I went with that.

My camp name is Shrek. I once dressed up like Shrek for a skit and it stuck, but I like to tell people it is because, like Shrek, I am liek a Onion whit many layers, a few the staff don't want to see.

I have a bunch of kids who call me the BOSS. We don't have camp name that the counselors must have but some of them have nicknames!
Fallen
05-04-2006, 04:42 PM
My camp name is Fallen. I picked it because for lack of something better I was writing a song about a fallen angel. I have no clue why, but I also used it as a screenname where people just started to call me Fallen. So when it came time to pick a camp name I was already use to being called Fallen that I just stuck with it. Even campers claim that they can't imagine my as anything, but Fallen.

I'm Spoot-- an obscure nod to the 90's cartoon the Angry Beavers. (It made sense at the time...) I'm considering changing it to Spook, because it's easier to remember, and also partly because I'm the queen of the easily startled. Seriously-- poke me and I'll latch onto the rafters. I can't decide whether it'd be more trouble to keep or change. Hmm-mm.
We've had a Jellybean too, in the past! How weird. :)
Marzz
09-08-2006, 01:26 PM
My camp name is Marzz. Although I have considered changing it a few times, and even abandoned it for a couple of weeks one summer, it has always stuck and I will always and forever be Marzz. In the end, I couldn’t imagine being called anything else at camp. Actually, a lot of people call me Marzz in the real world too, pretty much anyone who has ever known me through Girl Scouts, including the crew from the Schooner Zodiac. Marzz has melded into several other nicknames such as Marzzie, Maripan, Marzz-ola, Marzz-a-rama, and Marzz-burger-brainhead. My internet name, in the non-camp world is Caramia. I thought I might try using that as my camp name, but I’m just too well known as Marzz and it just wouldn’t work. I asked my campers this summer if they thought I looked more like a Caramia or a Marzz, and they all said “definitely more like a Marzz.” I’m not sure what that means really, but I’ll go with it. :)
I got my name when I was 15 and my best friend and I were playing computer monopoly. We decided to create extra players so we could buy their property really cheap and beat the computer. She was eating a snickers candy bar, and I had a mars bar, so those were the “names” of the fake players. When my friend typed “mars” she made a typo and hit the “z” key instead. I liked the look of it, so it became my camp name. Before that I was “Tweety” (gag).
It’s not a great story, so usually when the campers ask how I got my name, I tell them I am an alien from outer space and my space ship crashed so I came to work at camp to save up enough money to repair my ship. We used to recycle aluminum foil which I told them I used on my ship. They totally bought it! OK, so not really, but it was a lot more interesting than the truth.

I was a bus mom for the 12 and 13 year old girls who came up for July session. One of the girls looked at me and goes, we need a name for you. You're name is toaster. I eventually had an entire unit of girls calling me toaster. weird.
Mouse...

My camp name is Mouse, it's the only nickname I've ever had. It's been with me since I was very tiny. It stems from many things.

I didn't have a camp name amongst the kids, but had a camp name amongst the staff: Frodo, being a tad short and having flat hairy feet!!

I've had two camp names, "riflery guy" and "c-note." I was in charge of shooting sports at the first camp I worked at, and kids would come running up to me yelling "riflery guy!" when they saw me in main camp. It just stuck. In my second summer, one of the riflery staff started calling me "c-note." Since we taught class together and had the same time off, it stuck.
I think that a camp name should be something special that can instantly tansform you back to camp when you hear it or think about it. I just don't see how you can get that from a name you give yourself.
I accidentally gave one of my interns a camp name this year. He was my program director, and we were doing "Timberwolf Talent." I had gotten some other people from our department to be Andy Jackson, Paula Azul, and I was Simon Powell. (no, those names aren't misspelled). Anyway, I needed to come up with a name to use for my intern, who was playing the "host" of the show. Sometime during the afternoon, I called him "Andrew Seabiscuit," and it stuck. He emailed me to say that he recently saw a camper in town, and they called him "Seabiscuit."

You can. It works the same way. Really.

Trees, I can see your point. I guess that the two names I got used to at camp just bring me back to specific instances or moments, and those things are some of my most valued memories of my career so far. I can see how that would work for a name that you give youreself as well, since the important part is the memory.
Flukie
10-18-2006, 12:32 PM
This will be my 10th summer going by Fluke and I can't imagine being called anything. I named myself when I was a Program Aide at day camp - it was suggested I be "Tree" (we already had one and I wasn't that tall!) or "Flute" (which I play). I didn't like either, but Flute became Fluke and it's stuck.
My CITs have a variety of nicknames for me. I joke with staff that if you have a two syllable name, you become shortened to one, but if you are one, it gets made longer. I get called Flukie (my CITs seem to love that one!), Flukina, and Flukus - and a Brownie once called me Fluck by mistake. (Luckily, that one did NOT stick!!)
