View Full Version : Jobs outside camp
Camp is a summer job (even though it seems to take over our lives :P ). My question is, do you guys have any jobs in between camp sessions? What do you do during the off-season? Or is camp your only job. If you do have another job, what do you do with that job when camp rolls around?

Since I am still in school I work as a casheir at a grocery store on weekends. I get off for the summer by telling them that I will be gone for the summer so I cant work.

In high school I just babysat, and in grade 12 I had an everyday babysitting/nanny job. Now, after quitting university, I work full-time at a daycare as a non-ECE teacher. I was hired there on the terms that I would have another job in the summer. I also currently drive this guy to his wheelchair rugby practices on Monday night. And on Wednesday night I volunteer with Girl Guides. And in my spare time, I'm the program day director for my Girl Guide camp.
That's all.

I've been working as a cashier since I got home from camp at good old Canadian Tire. I really like working there, my co-workers and I have lots of fun, but I'm quitting becasue I'm going to camp and then away for school (and they can't give me a leave of absence). However, I've already been told that when I get home I can have my job back.
Last year when I went I also quit the job I was working, but thats because it was an absolutly horrible place and I was going to go insane if I had to stay there another minute (I had worked there for a year).

Currently I dont have a job outside of camp, but I use to volunteer at a hands on science museum. It was a really awesome job, very much like camp because I worked in the camp-in department :laugh2: And since the camp-ins were only done during the school year it worked fine with camp. Sadly they museum had to make some budget cuts and the department had to be cancelled.

I work at a fastish food place. Not so fast actually but the food is really good. I cook most of the time now and cashier occasionally. This summer I'm just going to quit because I'll be off to college down by Houston after camp. Last summer I just kind of told them hey I'll be gone all summer, hope that is OK. They like me well enough and I'm good enough at everything I do there they didn't have a problem with it!

I used to work at Pottery Barn Kids but I recently quit because school kidnapped my soul -- they said I could come back after I'm done with school but I'll be off to camp!

I teach art at a day treatment program for at-risk teens. Same kind of work that I do at camp, but it occupies me during the school year :)

I work at an after-school program for kids with mental disabilities, and I go to class in the mornings. It works out perfectly because they run the program September through May, and then they run a day camp during the summer, where some of the winter staff work - but I just go to camp and return to my job in the fall :)

I'm a busy little bee... who apparently collects jobs haha
I'm a student at CBU and I work at Reitmans, a womens retail store (last summer I was at day camp so I just kept my Reitmans job) I'm going to be leaving there at the end of May to go to camp.
I also work at the Caper Convenience Store (our campus store) and the Caper Patrol (a safe-walk program on campus). Patrol ends at the end of term and the convenience store said I can just give them 2 weeks notice when I'm ready to go.
I'm hoping next year to be the Womens Center Coordinator at the school, then maybe I can cut down on at least 2 of my jobs :P

I work 15-25 hours a week as a swimming instructor/lifeguard... People always know where I work because I consistently smell like a pool.
Yuck.

I know the feeling. I have spent most of the past 6 years in a pool.
When I'm at school I teach swim lessons to preschoolers and 2nd grade. I had to stop teaching pre-school because pop choir and school have kidnaped me and the second graders dont come for lessons... so I dont know how I'm going to make mony in the next month. But during winter break (when not at winter camp) and during spring break I work as a lifeguard at the pool I guarded at during my year away from school.

You're a crazy fool. I'm lifeguarding (for a college swimteam, ridiculous right?) for the sole purpose of smelling like a pool!
p.s. Worked at a health club for a few months this past spring... worst idea ever. It was a free membership, but after knowing how things operate (and how little the machines get cleaned, and who sweats all over them) it wasn't worth it at all. As the sales girl who spent all of her time cleaning the locker rooms, I'm positive my IQ went down every time i went into work.
Thank God for Camp.

I work as a personal assistant to disabled students when I'm at uni, doing secretarial and academic tasks.
In the past I've worked at a local school, a supermarket and at the lovely establisment that is McD's!

I work on the check outs at Asda and I hate it. I used to love meeting new people all the time, but now I secretly detest them all. Luckily, it's only a couple of shifts of week as I'm at uni.
This summer, I'm taking a 'career break' to go to camp, although I don't really want to return to work and may find another job. The reason I'm not quitting in June is so I can use my Asda discout card in Wal-Mart :p

Beer. Well, I don't actually know if it is in the UK, but I've been to many a European McD's and its on the menu there (sadly, when you don't speak tha language, McD's is always a relativly safe choice to get what you want). I've had McD's beer in Germany and I think in Austria? I can't remember.

Haha, I just spent like an hour looking at the different McDonald's websites. It's pretty interesting what some McD's serve!
I remember on our cruise last summer, when we stopped at Aruba, we went to the McDonalds to get some soda. They had very generic flavors: Cola, grape, orange, cherry, etc. They didn't have brand names, just the flavors. It was strange. But I love grape soda so that was a treat! The only place I see grape soda around here is at the food store and Wal-Mart.

The Brit McD's are quite similar to the US, we don't have beer, just on the Continent.
We have subway sandwiches, because over the last couple of years, the no. of Subways has increased and are taking their profits!

I guess I don't really have a job "away" from camp. My job IS camp. I am the outdoor program specialist for Girl Scouts. So, I do anything and everything outdoors. We have year-round weekend programs that we do at our camp and I do "outdoorsy" workshops during the off season too.
When it is time to go to camp, i just pack up and go! I love my job! It is awesome!

I'm currently on a gap year so have been pulling a 37.5 hour a week job as a sales assistant in Boots, a major chemist chain that sells make-up, skin care, electricals, baby stuff, medicines etc. I've now finished, except for 2 days where I'm filling in for a vacency. I pulled extra hours suck as working on New Year's day because they needed people.I didn't particularly like it but it was a job.I was working and the pay was good.
Now I am un-employed. But I'm off to Malaysia at the beginning of March to be an unpaid intern in a company that make commercials.Okay, I'm not earning but at least I'm out of the country.
I do babysitting alot and can get paid over £30 for 4 hours work which is good.

Ohh, I think I'll update since I have new "jobs" now!
So I'm in college now, (after dropping out of university last year, then working at a daycare) and I'm taking a program called Developmental Services Worker. (the courses: http://www.fanshawec.on.ca/programs/current/courses/DSW1.asp ). And I just recently quit a job working p/t for a family with 2 kids with cerebral palsy, because school has become consuming. And I volunteer with Girl Guides - both as a Brownie leader, and as a Camp Program Chair (in the fall/winter/spring). That's what I do!

ahh yeah i have a job update too...this year i'm an RA in a freshman dorm at my school...VERY similar to being a counselor at camp only your "campers" are 18 years old and they drink. lol!
I sapse I should update too. Last semester I was the night time chair person for my schools Activity Programing Board. I pretty much made signs advertising our night time events and helped with set up and take down. Our student director graduated at the end of last semester so I got promoted to his job.... So now I oversee all the chair's and the stuff they do.

I'm a teacher's aid for one of my proffesors from last semester. It's a generally cool job and I get to work with students, some of who are older than me which is a little funny.

I guess I should update. I've managed to get a temporary job in a cornish pasty/coffee shop. I'm paid less than at Boots but I don't mind. It's keeping me occupied before I leave for camp. They've even said I can come back after I finish camp and before I leave for University at the end of September.
