Letters from Camp is a series (http://www.talkcamp.com/showthread.php?p=7465#post7465) of fictional letters from 'Camper', an eleven-year-old writing home to his parents about his first summer at camp. He is in the youngest unit, aged between 10-12 years old.

Hi Dad,

I’ve had a good couple of days, don’t worry I’ve not been in trouble. I have been staying up late though, and that’s because Simon –he’s my counsellor –has been reading us all stories. He’d been reading George’s Marvellous Medicine, which is about a boy who is trying to sort out his horrible old grandma. It’s by this guy who did the movie Matilda, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Simon does this really weird voice for Grandma, I can’t even do it, but I’ve tried to persuade him to show me.

I had to do a swim test in the lake yesterday. We were all told how clean it was, but it was still all green and it was so cold! Apparently, it warms up, but I’m not so sure. The swim instructor said I did really well, which was kind of nice I suppose. Next period is about to start: Woodshop!

Camper

Letters from Camp is based at Summit Camp, Pennsylvania. Summit is a camp for children with emotional, social and behavioural difficulties, such as ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, or juvenile on-set bi-polar disorder, and has a no-sugar food policy.

Sounds like he's really starting to like camp.

That Simon guy though, he's a little strange (just kidding :P ).

Collis, I would love to talk to you at some point about this camp - how you found it, how long you'v been working there, etc. I'm hoping to eventually work with kids in a mental health capacity, so this sort of fits perfectly into what I intend to do with my life.

That's awesome :)

I'll give you a message with my email address in it, so we can chat on MSN.

It works a bit differently over here: I applied through BUNAC and I was interviewed by them. My application was sent out to several camps, and Summit replied within a week with an information pack and a contract, I read through, signed it and that was it!

This will be my fourth summer at Summit...
