there are alot of these stories from my camp but i can only share this one and others i witnessed and that dont effect the overall image. .....
So im sitting at the lake on the dock (my post that period) and a camper(11 years old) paddles over in a kayak and hes asks me do i know what a hand gesture he was making ment.
but any way its known as the shocker......
I told him yes but its not appropriet for me to discuss things of that nature with campers and he shouldnt even know what that is yet.
He procedes to say what it means "2 in the pink one in the stink." After he said that i was shocked (no pun intended) and asked where he learned that.. He said his councler a fellow lake lifeguard told him.... thats a problem on too many levels at my camp.
Its just disturbing an 11 year old knew that

thats like when my 11 year olds listen to rap music and know waht they are talking about. it makes me cringe. but i think i was the same way when i was that age. i knew what giving head was when i was 10 but the thought repulsed me- i can only hope it repulses them too.

I wonder if his parent found out! I think that we all have stories like that on. Your right the you need to becareful what you tell to others. Not to say this is not a safe place but I am sure other parents and directors read this site!! It's crazy!

As long as i didnt use his name im fine and his parents heard about it from his younger brother who was my camper. they emailed me and asked what I told them and they thanked me for how i handled the situation.

I've been called worse in my time! I think some of them are used to expressing themselves that way when they're frustrated, and don't know how to find alternate ways.
I think worst incident like that, was in my first year, and I'd just had to calm down a camper who had got stressed out. I thought I'd done OK, but as we walking down to the activity, he turned to me and screwed up his face, and spat out 'I hate you.' It's funny how small those words are, but I was pretty naive in my first year, and I was pretty devastated!!

A lot of times campers probably just want attention. As far as them learning inappropriate things from staff...it is very sad. Sometimes though they learn things from other campers and blame the staff. Or they misunderstand a counselor, or already knew what they were saying but blamed it on camp. I've been shocked at both what campers know and what comes out of some of the counselor's mouths. Though it is less and less shocking as the years progress. I think it is a mix of getting use to and things improving.

That is why I tell my staff all the time to watch what they say when ever campers are in camp! You never know what they are going to hear!
