View Full Version : Religious organization affiliations
Is your camp affiliated with a religious organization? If so, what one?
My camp is. You can tell what one just by the name of the camp: JCC Camps at Medford. In case you didn't pick it out, we're affiliated with our local JCC (Jewish Community Center). So I guess we might be affiliated with the JCC organization.

Question I just thought of for other Y Camp counselors
How much is Christianity emphasized at your camp?
At my camp we basically just push christian values and the Y Character Qualities. We sing grace before meals... but they aren't very religious. We have chaple twice a week- but we once again emphasize making good choices and trusting others.

From what I have seen most Y camp are the same. If you are in the south it's emphasized a little more.

Our camp is not religiously affiliated...in fact a few years ago (when i was a CIT) we were told not to talk about religion and if we were with campers who were to try and change subjects. Thankfully that has changed.

At one of my camps up north it was the exact same as you say. We had daily chapels or thought of the days that focused on a theme like friendship, gossip, honesty, etc. And we did grace too. Now I am at a Y camp in the south and it is a whole different story. Especially for me not being Christian. Its very bizarre. Up north we only had the four character values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Down here they have faith too. Campers do faith journals during the week. Prayers before meals are very in depth. Lots of religious camp songs sung regularly. And everyone is very deeply Christian (mostly baptist). Thankfully being the wonderful Y people that they are they are respecting my beliefs and not asking me to lead prayers and stuff. haha.
I guess it just depends on where you are and how much your local association makes the "C" in the YMCA an emphasis.
