I've been going to camp for eleven or so years now and this year will be my last as a camper. (I'm 16) My camp doesn't have a CIT program just the option of being a volenteer, which would be the equivilent of what a CIT does at a bigger camp. Anyway I would really like to do a CIT program or if at all possible be a counsellor. So if anybody knows of camps that hire staff as young as 16 or a good CIT program let me know. It can't be anything too expensive or too far away. Thanks in advance! =)

I would recommend my camp, but we're a day camp unfortunately. We do hire 16 year olds though if you're still interested. http://www.katzjcc.org/camps/homepage.asp

Some camp the CIT program is free. I think the reason is due to the fact that you work just as hard as a counselor. I don't think that most camps will hire a 16 year old. Pending state guidelines or ACA. Good luck finding a program.

you should be of the right age to be in a CIT program at most sleepaway camps and a counselor at many day camps. you just have to look around. my camp doesn't take CA's or JC's that didn't grow up at our camp unless the director personally knows them, but there are many camps in my area that probably would, check out some camps in wayne county PA.

There is a CIT program at my camp, however it is part of your final year as a camper.

I guess the question for me would be, what are you looking for? Are you looking for a single sex camp or a coed camp? What area are you looking at? How long of a program? I think a lot of us are at Girl Scout camps... :)

Also, your age and grade (?) if applicable, will effect your eligibility for most CIT programs. Have you completed other leadership programs? Had opportunities to work with kids? CIT is a good idea, but many camp counselors are hired each year who have not completed CIT....they match the age, certifications, etc of the camp(s) they have applied to work with. Good luck!! :)

Providing you don't mind going to Ontario, check out the Ontario Camping Association. http://www.ontariocamps.ca/ I don't know of many camps in Atlantic Canada - where I'm from as well - and partially because of that I work in the States, where there are tons of camps with awesome LIT/CIT programs, but they can be far away.

Thanks for the help everybody! I think I've actually find a really good LIT program at a camp only 4-5 hours away from where I live. Hopefully that'll work out!

Hey Campnerd, What camp is it?
We used to have a great CIT program at my camp, but alas, we no longer have it. Big Cove however has an L1 & L2 program. Sometimes they come to the camp I work at to see how they're run, how cool would that be huh?

hey campnerd,
that's awesome!! I hope it works out for you! :)
If you decide that you want to voluenteer for a few days or something, feel free to contact me. I've applied for director at camp Aitebreagh in orangedale (just outside Whycogomagh) and even if I don't get it (fingers crossed that I will) I'll know who to put you in touch with. We're always happy to get volunteers, and it's great experience.

I've been going to my camp since I was nine. I was a regular camper for 4 years, when i turned 14 I became an LIT (Leader In Training) -- program prior to CIT. When i was 15 I became a CIT. and now im 16 and I am a paid junior counselor
