I have a question regarding summer camps that I was hoping someone could help me with. I am looking for a general idea about what the application deadlines are for various summer camps, and when would be the best time for a camper to apply for summer 2006 sessions? I realize this probably varies a lot according to each individual camp, but if you could give me a general idea for small, medium and/or large size camps in Canada and/or the U.S., that would be fantastic.

(Sorry if this is a bit off-topic for this forum, but I figured with so many camp enthusiasts here someone might be able to answer...)

Cheers,
Phil

every camp is different...but for a camper, generally as long as the camp has room, anytime before march/april works to make sure you get all of the appropriate forms and mailings to be all set for camp. unless the camp is for a specific program or requires special skills or the age group is full, you won't be denied a place at the camp. it definitely also helps to call the winter offices of the camps you are interested in so you can speak to the directors and find out when a good time would be to send in an application. i recommend doing that now. also, it depends on the type of camp...i know that my camp has most prospective families tour the summer before and sign up around the end of that summer for the next one. for example, the families that toured during the summer of 05 have already signed up for the summer of 06. many of our age groups are full, but there are still some spots left in some groups.

As camper said, as long as there's room and still several months to go before camp, you should be able to register a kid for camp.

By the way, welcome to the site Phil!

check various websites set up by camps.
www.njycamps.org that should give you all the info you want about my camp.

I think that would be the best thing to check different camp web sites. Some camps do fill up faster than others. You might want to check the ACA camp web site you can search different camps by program.

That's very helpful, thanks a lot everyone. I did in fact check a few individual camp websites, but they all seemed very vague about application deadlines and times to apply. I guess that is because most places just take applications until they are full, as has been pointed out.

Glad we could help. :) I'm sure you'll be fine getting the registration through wherever you go. :D

When you checked the sites was there a place to contact the camp? A lot of camps do keep taking campers till they are full but some of them need paper work by a certain date (and then you can add weeks/switch em if there is room).

I also hope that you will find the right camp for your child. There are a lot of great ones out there!

I think it depends on the length of the session. If it's 8 weeks long it's a big commitment and you're probably going to have to register way ahead of time. My camp has 1 week sessions so it's not nearly as big of a money or time commitment so we have campers sign up as late as a couple of days before they come out.
