I was just thinking back to the first time that I went to camp when I was 5. And look I am still at camp 23 years later! I never thought that I would work at camp for so long. I guess when you are a camper for 10 summer’s counselor for 4 a water front director for one and a camp director for 6 years at the same camp it grows on you. Well I am no longer at the same camp, but I love my new camp, campers and staff.

So how old were you when you started going to camp. Where you a camper at your camp or another?

I was 6 the first time I went to camp - but it was a day camp. I went to that day camp from age 6-12, but from the time I was 9-13, I also went to an overnight camp. Camps in Iceland don't really have many exciting programs for older kids, so I stopped going after that, and didn't go back to camp until I was 21 (summer of 2004), when I worked at a camp in the US (I also worked there this past summer, and am planning on going back for a third summer!). I loved the overnight camp I went to when I was little, but there's no way I could work there, as it's a christian all-girls camp, and I'm not religious at all (I never was, but it didn't really matter when I was little - I just enjoyed the activities...)

I was 4 when I started going to day camp and 9 when I started going to overnight camp. I haven't missed a summer since. I guess I kept going to day camp after I'd get home from overnight camp probably until I was 11.

my first real summer as a camper at my sleepaway camp was when i was going into 1st grade, so i turned 6 at the end of that summer. since my family was always involved in camp though, i would go to camp, do activities w/the youngest girls during the day, and then go to sleep in my parents' house at camp. and yes i still work there...going on my
14th (real) summer!

I went to some girl scout day camp and stuff, but I don't really remember it all that well.
My first summer at resident camp I had just had my 10th birthday and was going into 4th grade. I don't work at that camp, but I have done some volunteer counseling there in the past, which was a great time. Unfortunately they don't hire counselors, so you can't really do more than a few weeks a summer. Fortunately I found the camp I'm at now which I love. One summer I got to do both a week there and a summer at my current camp. It was perfect.

The year before I got to go to camp we took my brothers to drop them off. My mom saw one of the little girls crying because their mom was leaving and told my dad about how that would be next year. No, I cried that year because I couldn't stay at camp and I didn't want to go home. Camp looked like too much fun, and I'd heard all these great stories from my brothers.

My first overnight camp was when I was 7... Before that, I went to various day camps at the zoo, art museum, botanical garden, etc. And I took 3 summers off in between being a camper and being staff (because they didn't hire me, not by choice), but I don't plan to be away any more than I have to for a long time!

It's great to see so many people who have been around camping so long still with it.. I wonder how many of you will stay with camp forever?

Unfortunately I know I won't be at camp forever. It's sad to know that one day I won't be able to go back. Maybe I could make some visits every now and then, but that'll be it. I hope that one day, when I have kids of my own, I'll be able to send them to my camp. That would be great. It would be even better if the campers I had would be their counselors.

It's fun to go back after you are gone and see how things have changed and what campers are now in charge!!
