Have you ever heard a song that made you think about camp? One of my favorites is Like a Rock by Bob Seger. It reminds me so much of what it is to be a camp counselor.

Here's a sampling of some of the lyrics of this song:

Stood there boldly
Sweatin' in the sun
Felt like a million
Felt like number one
The height of summer
I'd never felt that strong
Like a rock

I was eighteen
Didn't have a care
Working for peanuts
Not a dime to spare
But I was lean and
Solid everywhere
Like a rock

My hands were steady
My eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose
My steps were quick and light
And I held firmly
To what I felt was right
Like a rock

Like a rock, I was strong as I could be
Like a rock, nothin' ever got to me
Like a rock, I was something to see
Like a rock

And I stood arrow straight
Unencumbered by the weight
Of all these hustlers and their schemes
I stood proud, I stood tall
High above it all
I still believed in my dreams
There's more to the song, but this part applies the most to what I'm talking about.

So have you ever heard a song that made you think of camp?

the ataris...in this diary. the whole first verse through the chorus:

here in this diary
i write you visions of my summer
it was the best i ever had
there were choruses and singalongs
and that unspoken feeling
of knowing that right now is all that matters

all the nights we stayed up talking
listening to 80's songs
and quoting lines from all those movies that we love
it still brings a smile to my face
i guess when it comes down to it

being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up
these are the best days of our lives
the only thing that matters is just following your heart
and eventually you'll finally get it right

and others that remind me of camp:
-we built this city on rock and roll
-anything billy joel
-anything bruce springsteen
-debbie friedman stuff too!

In our end of summer newsletter one of the counselors shared that song. There are so many songs that remind me of camp. Certain songs pertain more to certain staff though and certain songs for certain summers. This past summer there were lots of songs,,,Build Me Up Buttercup, has to be one of the funniest/most annoying out of them. During training we did dances and that was the only song they played...we most have heard it ten thousand times! Holiday by Greenday always reminds me of camp and especially this one counselor who always sang to it. Walking in Memphis-Cher is the same way besides the counselor actually sang the song during our talent show a few times. Then Don't Phunk with My Heart-Black eye peas (besides we had the version "dont mess" something to do with Phunk sounds too much like f*ck) and Switch-Will Smith. And the guys had a hiliarious dance to What is Love (dunno who sings that). Also Welcome To the Jungle-GNR gives me camp memories...way too many songs. I love music, I love camp what a combo!

My Old Friend By Tim McGraw reminds me of camp in some ways. It reminds of leaving on the last day and having to say goodbye to all of the wonderful friends I've made.

i agree too...our dance counselor taught us all a dance to that song during orientation and we performed it on the first night of camp for the kids. then, when it was time for the camper dance performance later in the summer that was the dance they taught to the youngest girls and it was sooo cute!

Loofa, that's so funny because I was just thinking that! Anytime I hear The General by Dispatch, I now think of camp - because our kids wrote an end of session song to it!

We had a camper play that (piano man) on the piano for talant show once. it was really good. its funny because there are songs that remind you of camp and then there are songs that remind you of ppl at camp. hell everything can probably be associated with camp!

That's true. I have a CD of an old Boston concert which I listened to almost every day on the camp bus. While the songs have nothing to do with camp, they still make me think of camp because that's where I listened to it.

Aww man today I heard a song by Bruce Springsteen (one of my favorite artists) playing at one of the music classes today at camp. Now whenever I hear that song I'm going to think of the moment I heard it. :P I can still remember it so clearly... I got so excited when I heard it. (Yeah I'm a little weird. :P )

This song is not related to camp at all, but it has been dubbed our "song of the summer". We use it for wakeups, cleanups, and waterfronts. It's called "nowhere with you" by joel plaskett.
Not a popular band but a really catchy tune.

"High School Musical" was a big hit at my camp this summer. I get "We're all in this together" stuck in my head ALL THE TIME. My non-camp friends find it odd that I'm a 33 year old woman singing songs from a movie calle "High School Musical." I just laugh and sing LOUDER. :)

Aww HSM was huge at our camp this summer! Not sure why, but I don't think I ever heard anyone sing it though. If I did, I didn't realize it was HSM.

"White Houses" was THE song of summer for the CITs. They rewrote it so it was about "Green Tents" and growing up for their final campfire song. In order to do that though, we listened to it about a billion times at camp!!

This is quite an old thread, but I figured I'd post in this thread than start a new thread. Last night when our bowling team was coming home from the match, one of our teammates was acting up (being loud). So what did the bus driver do as a punishment? She turned on her children's songs CD. So we had the pleasure of listening to songs like Bingo and Row, Row, Row Your Boat. But one of the songs really stuck out to me. It was the Children of the Lord/Arky Arky song. When I worked with six-year-olds, our kids learned this song and sang it during Shabbat. So I thought it was pretty funny when I was able to sing the song. Yes, everyone else thought I was a little weird for knowing the song (and when to clap). :P Made me feel like I was back at camp though, so that was the great part of it all. :D

Great topic... on my myspace blog/profile I do a song of the week and I blog about why I chose it...I was having some problems finding one that I really wanted for the week... you reminded me of all my favorite camp songs....

Something to think about: The past 3 summers, we've (as a staff) made a compliation CD...every staff member contributes a song that describes them, their view on the summer, etc.... Every staff member that wants one, gets a copy...

Having international staff, we usually get some music that most of the staff has never heard of before..but it's great, because it helps expand the tastes...

It also provides opportunity for humor... for instance, one summer (keep in mind I work at GS camp) a staffer put "Little Girls" from annie on the cd. It was HILARIOUS!

To answer the thread...
Indigo Girls
Ani
Jack Johnson (matter of fact, my profile song is "better together" now)
Pinky and the Brain theme song
Rent
"Fighter" by Christina Agularia (sp?): yes, last summer was a rough one...
Disney songs

hey huys, is there a place where I can listen to those camp musics that you mention here? I'm so interested in your taste but usually the lyric itself doesn't express the whole mood of the song: ( So any ideas?
