If your director asked to start a new program at camp what would it be? Don?t think about money, just make sure that the kids would enjoy it. I am try to get new ideas..

Bowling definitely. I did a poll one day; I asked some counselors and campers if they'd like the idea of adding a bowling alley to the camp, and every single person I asked thought it was a great idea. Too bad it's really expensive.

i think that a camp radio station would be an awesome thing! the kids could be really involved in it. random, but an idea i liked
That's actually a good idea. They could have some of the older kids tell everyone the day's announcements, forecast maybe, etc. every morning. Or maybe they could make it like a news program on TV! I think counselors/staff would have to do that though. It would be cool though.

Actually i am trying to start a new program at my camp that is unrelated to the kids. Myself and Hayla99 are trying to start a staff mentorship program. Using 4th year + staff to mentor first year staff making the transition from being campers to staff.

I'd love to see low ropes elements added. Some of them we can do ourselves, others have to be done... Maybe someday... :)

oooh a camp radio program sounds pretty sweet! i cant think of a new program right now. but if i do ill post it :)
It would be cool if our camp added games like badminton or maybe handball. They're fun, but badminton might be a bit complicated for younger kids (plus they would probably have trouble swinging at the birdie).

Dave, I think that would be a great new game for older campers to learn!

Would it be too much to ask for my camp to teach rugby...

the kids at my camp love handball dave...and for our apache relays there is always a badminton event where the kids have to hit 3 birdies over a net. it always takes them a couple of tries!!! fun though, i would love to learn the rules of badminton.

You can do rugby without kids getting hurt. We did it at my camp and the kids loved it! I think if you have cabin time you sould try it with your group.

Hmm, if I ever see my camp director before camp starts I might ask them about handball. It's an easy game to play, easy rules, and plus you said that the kids at your camp love to play it. I'll have to think about this. :D
As for badminton, I know how to play and it would definitely be an older kids game. The younger kids could just do drills like hitting the birdie over the net or stuff like that, but older kids could play actual games. This could be a fun game too.

Do you play team hand ball or wall hand ball?

I've never heard of wall handball. I've only played team handball.

we play team handball, but my camp used to have wall handball courts too until like the early 90's. team handball is a great game to develop throwing and catching skills and teamwork. we play team handball w/kids that are ages 9-13. it's a little hard for the youngest ones and the oldest ones find it kind of boring, but the rest love it!

Wall hand ball is big at ymca's in the mid-west.. It's is a lot of fun! It's king of like tennis or racket ball but you use your hand!

Last summer my camp got something called speed bird, which is like badmitton with a shorter net. Even the eight and nine year olds could play it. It was a fun activity for the little free times we have before lunch and supper.

At any of the camps I worked at and future ones I love to do some kind of program for the older girls with self-esteem and promoting a healthier and happy teen. I can't tell you how often even working with 10 year olds I see very poor self-esteem and girls who just do not know how to be proud of who they are.
Also I'd love to see beaded jewlery. I do it as a hobby and think the girls might actually like it.

If I could choose any program I would probably add a zip line and create an obstacle course for the campers. I think it would help make teaamwork a more important aspect and bring all the kids together for some fun activities.

Ropes courses are great. I got to work with a group of high school kids all day today on our course. It was great!

I would think the coolest thing in the world would be if we could have a trapeze class at my camp. I know some camps have this and I think it is just too cool for words! Yea.. that's definitely what I would want at my camp.

you know, i thought trapeze would be cool to have at my camp too when i saw it at other camps...but then i went on club med's trampoline when i was there every day and my hands hurt SO BAD after and it was kind of scary hahaha. it was still fun but it wouldn't be one of my first choice things to add to my camp now. haha.

That is the worst part of camp directing. Thinking about campers safty all the time. We don't want our campers to get hurt. I know that all of the counselors think about that as well. I guess some fun is just not for camp!

Update on my camp program! So I spent this past weekend up at my camp hanging out with my camp director and his wife(my best friend) and he was telling me that our skateboard program just has to pass budget and it's through!! So yay, I get to teach kids to skateboard next summer! It's awseome because camp and skateboarding are my two favorite things and now I get to do both at the same time!
