What's the food like at your camp?

not so bad considering we have 550+ people in total. Its kosher and served cafeteria style except on shabbat which different groups of staff serve.

most of it is good! there are only a couple of things that i won't touch, and a few more than that that the campers won't touch. it's definitely on the good end of camp food though, we have great grilled cheese, pizza, chicken nuggets, traditional camp food. but my favorite meals are shabbat dinner and any other time where they make caesar salad. i'm also a fan of tacos b/c then i can make a really good taco salad.

Mine is...not so good! Mine is Kosher, all natural and sugar free and sometimes it's really good but a lot of the time it's pretty awful! The meat cuts are especially bad, so I usually go vegetarian for the summer. Last year, the vegetarian was lovely: samosas and fresh veg like asparagus etc. This year was dreadful! It was stuffed cabbage every other day, or it was some meat wannabe. I did put on our staff questionnaires that the food does need to get better.

The food at my camp isn't terrible. I mean it's edible & tastes somewhat decent. Usually I just eat salads though & occassionally have the nuggets or grilled cheese. On Fridays we had shabbat dinner also...I like those nights. We also have cookouts twice a week along with 2 outdoor lunches.

I love day camp. I get to bring or buy my lunch everyday. So if it bad it's my problem!

My camp's food is decent, though it has its ups (vegetarian stir fry) and downs (salisbury steak, or baked potato). People complain about it a lot, but it's really not that bad.

Aaaah the beauty of camp food and camp food discusions! our camps is in flux. it was the best i can remeber last year. i mean there were times where i didnt want to touch the food. but people have to be understanding that when you cook for a couple hundred people the food isnt going to be great. during training though the food was really good and our staff lunchs were pretty awesome as well. and i loved the kitchen staff this year. they were so happy and would joke around with us and were always trying to fix stuff we liked. a lot better than last year when i got fussed at about trying to find napkins!

It's not bad. I wish there were more fruit and veges, but otherwise it's pretty decent.

Ours is okay, at best. Well, there are some good dishes, but most are just okay. Our camp is kosher (not that it really affects the food quality). Tuesdays and Thursdays are meat days, where meat is served during lunch. Juice is served with lunch, and we get regular popsicles later in the day. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are dairy days, and milk is served with lunch. Also, this is when we get the good popsicles (such as drumsticks, push-pops, etc.).

Our food is actually pretty good!! I really like it and my kids hardly ever complain about it or ask for peanut butter.

For the most part our food is very good- but a lot of times we have really gross meals. Usually the only ones that are totally bad are the ones that there is nothing hot to eat. Like tuna salad, egg salad, and sub days. Sub days are the worst. I'm also not a fan of chicken chow main. For some reason Chinese food just doesn't work at a Jewish camp.... Most of our food is generally pretty good though. The only real complaint I have is that we have too many carbs.

I'd rather have the same food every two weeks with a 5 star chef than different food each week with the 0 star staff we have at our camp. :P

i don't know...five star chef or not its hard to cook for hundreds of people and still make it "gourmet." no offense, but i can't really understand when a camp says they have a five star chef because it's difficult no matter what...you're going to have to cut something somewhere. maybe not money-wise but timewise or whatever.

we have around 275 youth each session. in the kichen there is about 10 staff and when they need more help they would have house keeping to help them out.

yeah, my camp has 280 girls. we have a head chef, a head cook, and a kitchen staff of about 20 (and thats just on girls side, boys side has the same), and a brand new state-of-the art kitchen that is run VERY efficiently. however, you're going to run into issues some days, whether it looks like it's perfect or not. i'm not saying you guys don't have great food, i looked at your website and it sure looks great, my camp is considered "upscale" and we definitely don't have that complexity of food. i'm just saying that behind the scenes, it's very difficult, and you would probably be surprised at the difference if you tasted what that chef cooked for one and what he cooked for 275.

Our food is served family style, which I really like. I'm a BIG fan of meal times, mostly because they're set up in an organized-chaos kind of way, and that's where I function the best (opening day, anyone?). The food is alright, most of the time, just traditional kid-friendly food. My main problem this summer was that we were getting way, way too many carbs and not nearly enough protein. Dinner was usually alright, but when we had lunch in the dining hall (we have an outside BBQ once a week and a packout lunch once a week) it was usually not so good - baked potatoes or sandwiches are just not going to be enough to keep you full until dinner, especially at camp! But it usually tasted decent.

We also had a salad bar at dinner this year, which absolutely saved my life! I don't eat red meat, and the veggie option was rarely a good protein substitute, so I lived on the beans from the salad bar, and PB&J when there were no beans... because usually, the veggie option was some sort of tomato sauce with cheese and/or pasta. But we always had enough fruit and veggies.

The one thing I absolutely hated this year, was that we moved the "options" (cereal at breakfast, PB&J at dinner) into the dining hall, instead of keeping them in the kitchen. Because of that, more kids didn't really give the food that was served a real try (although they always have to try a little of it), and just went for the easy, familiar thing. I'm hoping well keep the cereal and the peanut butter in the kitchen next summer... it seemed to work just fine before this summer.

Ya I know. I can see in back for the kichen how hared it is for them. but they do a good job for what they have. they are making another kichen for the kids. so there will be two times the kichen staff there.

I agree audur, camp has way too many carbs. im normally a "grase" eater...i eat a little bit through out the day so sticking to just 3 meals a day was a change. i also wish our salad bar had more options but the food this year was pretty good. except the one day we had nachos for a meal...that isnt a damn meal im sorry!!!

Most of the food is okay of course there are certain meals that are really good and others that are horrible. Usually over the course of the week session there's a balance between how many 'good' meals there is and how many 'bad' meals there are. Of course it depends on how many kids are registared for the session and how much they eat. Leftovers at camp is definitly the worst meal.

We're allowed to eat as much as we want too. Usually you don't want to eat as much food as you can at our camp, with the food they give us! :P Well, not all of it's bad. The pizza bagels are the most popular lunch at our camp, I think. They're awesome. :D

Breakfast and dinner are served family style with two staff and eight campers at each table. One unit sets the tables, serves the food, and cleans up. Lunch is served buffet style with units sitting together. Groups come in at 15 minute intervals for lunch.

The food was pretty good this summer. The only complaint I had was (as someone else said!), the amount of carbs at a meal. We'd have muffins, waffles, and potatoes for breakfast one day. Oh man! Lol. But, our director just kept smiling and telling us that at least it was edible this summer.

PB&J is an option at each meal (let's not go there...) and there is a salad bar at lunch and dinner. (Though I think kids are more apt to get salad if it is served on the table.)

And the Ad Staff has our own table with the director's family. Lol. Sometimes we sit with the units depending on if we are short staff or not - but mostly, we use that time to catch up on all aspects of the day.

The first camp that I worked at was total camp food all the time: sloppy joes, mini pizzas, hotdogs, spaghetti..... There camp where I now work has a cook that is in the food business outside of camp so we eat turkey, veggies, roast beef, stirfry, ham, salad with every meal - all homemade meals. We get to make the sloppy joes and mac n cheese when we cook dinner in out units.

Our camp food is really good. There are a few meals that aren't favorites, but over all we eat well.
I don't know about anyone else's camp, but we have our biggest meal at lunch usually. It gives the kids plenty to run on for a full afternoon, and with rest hour right after it, there's no worry about it filling the kids up and wearing them down.
We eat family style with a good salad bar (great really green lettuce and such). Cookouts and buffet are the only exceptions to family style. Buffet is also known as leftovers. It's actually a good meal because there's a lot of variety and usually it's got a lot of the favorite items on it, like cheese lasagna one of my camp favorites which we get every Sunday for lunch.

We have two chefs and four other kitchen staff (usually from Russia or Eastern Europe) to serve about 175 people all together.
