So I asked about the staff. What do you do about end of session campers awards? I think that this is another hard one to think about and pick. I also feel bad for the campers who don't get anything.
What does your camp do?

We don't do any special awards or anything for our campers, I mean they are only there one week! But it would be cool if we did!

we have spirit awards, chosen by the oldest girls. one goes to a camper(or two) from each division. this is done at banquet which is at the end of the summer

at the end of the summer we give a tennis award for each age group and for the oldest girls, we have a series of 10 awards that are traditional to our camp, given since probably the 1930's, they are: senior spirit, senior leadership, senior athlete, senior character, all around senior, camp spirit, camp athlete, camp leadership, camp character, and all around camper. to get one of those awards in your PC (last year as a camper) summer is really special and a huge honor. as for the rest of the camp, everyone gets an envelope in a group meeting at the end of the summer with an award in it for something they do very well or an intercamp team they were on, along w/their red cross card and awards for making good videos at video in the hobby center. another way that we award girls is by the leadership roles they get in their PC summer. getting to be camper chief or assistant chief in color war is the biggest honor (there are 6 of those) followed by chief or assistant of a tribe (8 of those) or co-captain of red, white, and blue day (another 6). after that you can be camper captain of an evening activity or sports day. by the end of the summer every PC has been captain at least once. the leadership positions are chosen based on a camper's character and being a good camper throughout her entire time at camp, including previous summers.
We don't have any camper awards. We do have bunk of the week awards though. Last summer, our bunk was the first bunk of the week. If the counselors want to, they can do camper of the week awards for their own bunk though. I'm thinking about doing this next summer. One of the bunks in my division did this last summer and the kids loved it.

We don't have any awards unless the unit staff makes a "cleanest tent award" or something like that... But the AWITs have a horse show twice a summer (one for each group), and they win trophies and ribbons in that.

I guess that's why our camp doesn't award camper awards. Instead they do bunk awards. Therefore all campers will win eventually and not one single camper is selected over the others.

Oooh. We have a lot.
Golden Broom: Given to the unit each day that has the cleanest tents, pavilion and bathrooms.
Blue Bucket: Giant bucket filled with munchies given at the end of the session to the unit that has won the Golden Broom the most. (The girls think it is TONS of food, but it is enough for one pack of cookies per girl and a couple pieces of candy!)
Sailing Rankings: Given out at the end of the session to show what girls have learned. Biggest two rankings are Able (signifies you can move to Advanced Sailing on the Bay) and Skipper, the highest ranking given.
Polar Bears: Given to girls that get up and swim in the morning.
Running Bears: Given to girls that get up and run in the morning
Iron Bears: Given to girls that alternate/try both running and swimming.
Then there are the boards. In our dining hall, there are wooden boards all around for various awards. These include:
150 Mile Club: Units that bike 150 miles in a session.
250 Mile Club: Units that bike 250 miles in a session.
Boutilier Award: Given to girls who have given their all to the biking program and helped enhance the program in one way or another.
GCATTS: Girls who successfully survived the Great Canoe Adventure To The Sea, a 20+ mile trip to the ocean. (The group attempting it this year found the way is blocked and needs to be cleared.)
One Match Fire Club: All the girls that successfully light a one match fire.
Proulx Award: Given to sailors who show a lot of determination and don't give up during the sailing race.
Board of Skippers: Celebration of those who have acheived the rank of Skipper.
Spirit Award: Given to girls who show the most Favorite spirit and enthusiasm.
We also hand out recognitions to girls who complete the windsurfing program, bike (but not 150 miles) and so forth. This year, we recognized the Nurse's daughter who earned her first 3 Try-Its in 3 weeks at camp and our Oceanography unit, who were the first girls to earn the Council's Oceanography IPA in 3 years. The final awards ceremony is whatever the Program Manager decides to make it (hey, that's me!). And I know that I like to recognize as many girls as possible. :) The boards are a big deal though - they go missing and the group begins to whisper and guess who is going on it. It is a lot of fun.
Wow that's quite a list you have there Flukie! I wish our camp had that many awards. :P

We do really fancy paper plate awards at final banquet at the end of each session. We also have cleanest cabin award, as well as athletic team awards(including championship winners and MVP). Cabins usually do individual superlatives for counselor coffee house(when the counselors perform for the kids).

Well, our camp prides itself on awarding campers. Each counselor makes up an award for each camper based on something they do well. These are given at closing ceremony in each unit. The counselor will say a few words describing the person, then announce their name. An Example "This award is the energizer bunny award for a kid who was always excited and got everyone in the cabin excited for their activities. We loved having his energy in the cabin. This is for you Tommy!"
Also, there are special awards such as Camper of the Year that the staff votes on. And MVC for Most Valuable Camper (given to 2-4 kids each week). It's nice that everyone gets an award and then that the really special kids get another recogintion.
We believe that Camp is a great place to award kids because it may be the only time that kids get any recognition for an adult. Also, they feel so proud to be acknowledge for something special in front of their peers.

omg I totally forgot about Warm Fuzzies!!! Warm Fuzzies rule! They are little puff balls with eyes and feet and magnets on the back. The kids write things that their friends or counselors did for them that they didn't have to do and then we read them at lunch and the people who they are for get a Warm Fuzzy and they can like stick the magnet to their bunk or whatever. The kids are like 6-11 so they love them!

That's a good idea. It could even be used as an icebreaker-type activity. You could tell the kids to choose a kid other than their best friend. This would make them interact more with other people.

Oooh! I also forgot - at the end of the week, each camper goes home with a "half-sheet certificate" - on the certificate, it has lists of "things" we do at camp - the staff circle all the things campers participate in, add in any other things they've done and write in a positive comment for each camper. Parents love it because when they say, "What did you do at camp?" and their daughter says, "Nothing!"... they have an idea! The kids like seeing what their counselors have to write about them as well. It also challenges staff to think about positive aspects of each camper - some are easy, some are a lot harder.

We have awards for best camper from each cabin and they get a flower and they make a wish on awards night in front of camp. We also have an honor cabin and a healthiest cabin for each division at the end of each session. The honor cabin is chosen based on unity, cooperation, etc.. amongst the cabins. The healthiest cabin is the cabin that has the least amount of visits to the nurse. Everyone gets a cross necklace(Catholic camp) at the end of each session as well, so I don't think anybody feels left out.

It's great to see that all of the campers are giving awards at the end of most of your sessions.
