Our camp calls it the GS bible. I think it can be a little bit too resticting. Kids can get injured doing just about anything, and some of the things mentioned in there aren't all that dangerous main example I can think of is tug-of-war(peace depending on where you go).
I was looking for other opinions.

Tug of war is dangerous!!!!! Elbows in the face, rope burn, and I could go on.
I agree safety wise is not all encompassing but it is a very good reference.

Although I have worked at GS camps for 4 summers so far I have never actually read safety wise. That being said we have something similar in Guiding called Safety First - and I think it is really important to have standardised guidelines so that parents know that the where-ever they send their girls - in terms of camps or GS troops - that the safety standards in will be consistant.

I agree that it is good for managing parents.

There used to be a document called Safety First but it's now called What you need to know about safety. It incorporates Safe from Harm, Girlguiding's policy and practices from injury and abuse.

I am warranted - knew it as safe from harm but couldnt think of the name when i made that post! I actually have a copy of What you need to know so obviously I need points for thinking before I speak!!!

Safety-Wise, oh how I love ye.... I don't really have much to add or subtract from this conversation, I just wanted to express my undying love for that book (eyeroll).
I agree whole-heartedly that there needs to be a consistent reference for all troops, camps, etc because that way we don't all face the "what do we do" moment when something does happen. I agree that it's fantastic for parents to say "how is my daughter going to be supervised/protected during (insert activity), even if I'm not there". However, I do think that some of their restrictions seem silly to most people with common sense.
However, it's just like warning labels. They'd not have told you not to use the hair dryer in the shower unless some idiot had done it once. Same thing with making sure that a girl is wearing a helmet while riding a horse or dangling by a rope 100 feet in the air.

yeah - but there are people who are just that stupid that they do actually need to be told those things. Its like in the UK cartons of milk contain a warning that they contain milk and eggs have a warning that they contain egg! How stupid do you have to be to need such warnings!

Our camp has a book called "Don't kill your campers". It's all about safety and stuff.
:D Ok. I'm just kidding. But that is a great book title.

I agree that is an amazing title, I bet the author could get pretty creative with materials inside.

I have a rule that I give my campers - and that is "Dont Die!"
annknee

I also like to add the no injuries rule in there too with my Guides! It makes life a lot more simple!! So far the rule has worked a lot better than "no mobile phones" or "wear uniform"!!

How about "How not to get sued" as a title.

"How to win a hot dog eating contest without puking"
We had a counselor once that was trying to set a record for the most prunes eaten in one sitting. He made it to 109 before he threw up. :speechles

My question is why would anyone want to eat that many prunes?

It was a boy's camp and the guy had to prove his "manliness".

I'd be more worried about the effect the prunes had working there way down rather than up!

I'm not quite sure how eating prunes is manly.
In a similar event last year one of units at my camp had there counselor skit envolve "potions". One counselor mixed things like mayo, grape jelly, and honey together and one of the others would eat it. The skit ended with everymember of that units staff bolting for the bathroom.
The moral of this story is think about before you eat something to entertain you're campers.

Ew I had to eat an entire serving bowl of jello and eat a container of baby food through a straw for various counselor contests. Ew.
PS - when coming up for events for something like this it is indeed impossible to drink a glass of water while upside down. Just FYI.

Last year one of our ULs managed to get 18 marshmallows into her mouth while paying fluffy bunnies - I videoed and then had the memory card stolen!
