I know that we all love camp games. What is one that you can stand to play? I know that we still have to keep a smile on our faces for the kids.

hmmmm there are so many camp games...im trying to go through them all in my head! i have to say probably dodge ball...just because i dont like that game! but for a camp specific activity it has to be where people line up holding onto a rope and have to tie it in a knot without letting go. i never actually tried it with campers but with just the staff it was annoying!
I hate flag football. The kids never want to play, the specialist sometimes has to make them play because no one wants to play, kids are always getting hurt... I just hate everything about it.

I was just thinking that!!!
So bad - the staff was playing that game during pre-camp while our director escorted the CEO around camp. They stopped in front of the lodge, and our CEO turned to the director, completely serious, and said, "And what do you do when you have male staff?"
Our director just looked at the staff, looked back at the CEO and said, "We don't play that game with male staff."
Hahahahaha. Oh dear.
"Come on ride the big fat pony, come on ride the big fat pony, come on ride the big fat pony, this is how we do it. Front to front to front, my pony. Side to side to side, my pony. Back to back to back, my pony. This is how we do it!" Ugh!

OK so if you don't know, Big Fat Pony is a game where all of the kids and counselors that are playing get in a big standing circle and then there is one person in the middle who is it. (more people can be in the middle depending on how many people are playing) and the person who is it walks around the circle while evryone sings "Come on ride the big fat pony, come on ride the big fat pony, come on ride the big fat pony, this is how we do it. Front to front to front, my pony. Side to side to side, my pony. Back to back to back, my pony. This is how we do it!" -My camp actually sings it a little different, but it's the same concept. Anway so while the person is walking around the circle they are kinda like doing a dance to the song(the movements are kinda hard to explain). They then pick another person to be in the circle. The game goes on forever and ever and it is so annoying!!
I does sound like a pretty, uhh, dumb game. :P

At my camp we use a modified version as a cheer. I hate it with a passion

yeah we do a version of the pony game too, it's only annoying sometimes though. pretty much any game that can be played at a meal gets pretty old after awhile, except for drinking games that we convert into "drink more water" games. those never get boring b/c the kids get so into them haha.

I hate playing 3 times around the house. Although once a camper did hide in a trash can and when everyone came thundering around the corner he jumped out. I was hilarious. I couldn't tell him off for laughing!

I don't hate it but I'm not too fond of elbow tag. I hold the camp record for falling while playing 17 times in one game.
Favorite is probably wink, you get to tackle people.

I'll put this as nicely as possible..... Each evening we have an all-camp game of some kind. Sometimes they are alright.. But sometimes they require racing, or running from one end of the camp to the other and back and forth in order to find clues or some crap. Anywho, at 7pm at night, my favourite activity does not include pushing a heavy wheelchair and its occupant up a hill, across grass, down a hill, over a dirt path, up a hill.... I'm tired just thinking about it. PLUS.. You've always got kids who are more able-bodied than some, so they're at the front of the line, getting the clues and all the exciting action.. and the kids at the back, being pushed by tired counselors.. are at the back and see nothing..
I also despise football, but we don't play that at my camp. I just don't like it and thought I'd share.
I'm suprised I havent answered this.
I used to HATE stink tag but now the thought of throwing flower filled socks at campers is kinda growing on me.
I do not like dutch auction/ monk man suitcases. It makes the cabin messy (and if anyone reads the aca boards, you know how I feel about having a clean cabin), we always end up with objects not claimed at the end of the night and the older campers just don't like the game.

We play Round the Pony, which is exactly the same as Big Fat Pony. I'm really not a fan of that, or Little Sally Walker, or other games where you do those kinds of things. They're so annoying!

I just think that people should know enough games that no game should ever be played to excess - especially when there are sites like ulitmate camp resources which list plenty of games are are free to access!

I am with you guys there! We do Little Sally Walker and Going to Kentucky, which are basically the same thing as the Pony game. The little girls like them a lot, though no one ever really wants to dance in the middle!
I actually don't mind Sally Walker and Going to Kentucky because they are easy and the kids like them and it isn't tooo much running, but we aren't sitting on our bums!
I'll think of a game I hate later, but i love the screaming game because the kids love love love it and it gets them tired out for bedtime!

If I remember correctly you spilt your group into 2 and they stand in 2 lines as far apart as possible in lines facing each other and holding hands. Then one team shouts "red rover, red rover we call [name of player] over" and then they have run across the gap - if they break through the line of the team that called them then they go back to their team if not then they join that team.

We have never been able to play Red Rover at camp, but I wouldn't let my campers even if we wer allowed to since I have seen too many injuries. Granted, they were both increased due to the place we were playing, but I hate the game. I wlaked one of my friends down to the nurse after he fell to the blacktop and saw another person go right into a wall. Luckily the wall didn't break, but that was because it was an outside wall and made of like tile or something, so she hurt her head. Hate that game!!! I was in 5th grade when my school banned it. this was also when the injures took place. I am not sure what ladders is.
Smudge
04-27-2008, 08:02 PM
its a game were you pair up and sit across from your partner in two rows so you look like a ladder - and then each pair is numbered - then a leader calls a number or several numbers - you then run up the center of the ladder jumping over every ones legs, down the outside and then back up the center to your place - while racing your partner!

thats fruit salad.
instead of numbers ur given fruits.
i love that game

Ah in the Uk we play fruit salad in a circle - we pick maybe 4 fruits and go round the circle giving people one of these - then we have one person in the middle who will call out a fruit - they will run across the circle to switch seats and the person in the middle will try to get to one of those seats if they suceed there will be a different person in the middle and they call this time!
Isnt it funny how we can call different games the same thing!
Giggles
04-28-2008, 05:06 AM
yeah, we do that with songs too!
Smudge's fruit salad sounds like a fw games we have here. We do one with a parachute. Everyone holds on to one color on the parachute, or pick one of their 2 colors if they have to have 2. Then the group bends down with the parachute and then makes it go up quickly. As it is going up the counselor calls a color and everyone with that color has to run underneath to someone elses spot.
We also have one where the person stands in the middle of a circle. Everyone else puts down an object or shoe or article of clothing to mark that there is a spot there. The person in the middle says something they like or they've done. Then the people who also like that thing or have done it run to a different spot. Person who doesn't get a spot is now in the middle.

i have played that parachute game too! And a variation of it where you call out things - colors or cloths people are wearing, hair colors etc and anyone wearing them switches places!
Antoher variation of fruit salad is stations (although in the USA road trip might be a better title) - you write out train stations (or town town names) on card and they are put on the floor infront of chairs - which are set in a circle facing inward - one less chair than the number players. the odd player shouts out a route eg - Boston to salt lake city via new york, chicago and denver - the people sitting at those places all have to switch places while the person in the middle has to try and get to one of the seats!

I liked playing Ladders when I was in the Guides!! Red Rover was banned in junior school for us when arms were broken!! We also played a game called POLO and Peggy Leggy lol which I used to enjoy in the yard!
The parachute game sounds familiar though we called it 'Have you Ever?' and you say "If you have ever (fill in blank) and those who have run across other side! the game was a great icebreaker and we said stuff like if you have ever been on a plane, eaten ice-cream, driven out of state, broken a bone, been to camp before etc possibilities are endless :D x

There's this game played at my camp with a parachute and a person sits in the middle and everyone twists the parachute around them and then pull it back really fast so they spin, and I haaate it. It's probably because the only time I did it I got hurt so it scares me when people play it with girls!

04-30-2008, 06:59 PM
that game can be fun and scary at the same time! I have a love/hate relationship with it! I do love parachutes in general though!! So much you can do with them to keep kids occupied and it is such a simple thing!!
