When you have time off at camp either in the evenings or like a day off where do the counselors hang out?
At my camp we don't have a counselor lounge or anything so on nights off we just hang out in the dinning hall or at our village fire ring becuase we can't leave camp. If it's a day off we go into town and hang out at the mall or go to a movie or sometimes take road trips to places like Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, or if we are really ambitious- Las Vegas!

During the week we get an hour off in the day and 30 minutes at night. we normally hang out in our staff lounge (well thats what it is called but is used for other things as well). or during the hour off in our cabins. some staff also make phone calls or go to the staff house (where the directors live) and maybe check email or something like that. then we get a night off which last 3 and half hours. so we normally go out to eat and then maybe to the store or bowling or something like that. on weekends we do all sorts of stuff. we had a canoe trip one time and another time went to this arcade place as a group. some people also go clubbing or dancing or we might go to the movies (and bowling one again). we also might have a "party" of some sort at one of the locals houses. all kinds of stuff to do! sometimes its just hard to communicat through everything. plus we like to catch up on our sleep. :)
Well at our camp we're given two breaks per week, and we can earn more. I've taken one break in my two years of camp, but counselors usually play ga ga on their breaks. They also go to the cafeteria to get some free popsicles.

I know that my staff do hang out after camp. Most of the are 17-22 so I am not sure what they do, but I know they hang out at night after camp! There are days I just feel so old.

During each day we get 1-2 periods off...just depending on the activity our kids are at & the age of our campers. Each counselor is OD twice a week...so we really get a lot of time to leave camp at night. We get 1 day off a week & we can take 1 over-night during the summer. It's nice to get away from camp & your campers for a little bit...it keeps you sane!

We've got a Staff House where staff can go to hang out, talk, watch movies, etc. on their shorter breaks (2 hours per day). For nights off (6:30-10:30, once a week), the most popular place to go is Wal-Mart! People go to various restaurants, the mall, home, and other stores too, but a night off isn't complete without a Wal-Mart run.

Let's see. Our staff gets 2 hours off a day and 1 night off a week (Evening flag to morning flag). In a two week session, you get a 24-hours off (Normally evening flag to evening flag). Staff is allowed to leave during any break - but they have to sign on on the tag board.
Some staff bike to the library or the ocean. Some go on ice cream runs. Some hang out in the staff house (kitchen, bathroom, and Great Room with TV/Internet). One nights off they will head into Hyannis to shop or just get away from camp or Chatham for dinner. basically, anywhere off camp! :) Dunkin Donuts, the movies, the bay...
We have no Wal-Mart. I cannot believe I survived the summer without it. I can't believe our director survives without it year round! The closest Wal-Mart is either off Cape or in the Falmouth area (45 minutes away). We do have a K-Mart in Hyannis though... :)

We get 2 hours of time off everyday, we hang out in the staff house, there is a computer with internet, a phone, a shower and a kitchen. We sleep or do paper work on out TO. We get one night off a session from evening flag till 8 the next morning. We go to wal-mart, the old oar house (bar/marina near camp) or out to eat somewhere in a near by town.

during periods off during the day, most of the time we nap b/c we're not allowed to leave camp, but the boys are, so they'll go to the sandwich place down the street sometimes. or we'll make phone calls. we have 3 or 4 nights out a week and mostly everyone goes to this one bar down the street, it's like a big counselor tradition and sort of a rite of passage when you go for the first time. or sometimes we'll drive to mcdonalds or a pizza place in town. on days off if it's nice we go to a place called skinners falls on the delaware river, it's really relaxing you just lie out all day. then from there we go to walmart, out to dinner, then back to camp to shower, then out to the bar we go to. when we have a night off, it's from taps until 1:00 AM curfew we have to check in with whichever grouphead is on head OD. our days off are from inspection in the morning to 1 AM curfew. we don't have like a "staff lounge" but after evening activities are over our canteen turns into that, it has a big screen tv w/satellite. if it's really nice out they'll sometimes show a movie in the amphitheater for everyone on their night out. if you want to use the internet all you have to do is ask my mom and she'll hook you up with it either in her office or in the hobby center.
The pub *cough*, which is just a 7min drive away, but during the day we'll lounge around outside the nurses house, which pretty much overlooks all of the main field.

We have a staff lounge and we also hang out at the camp store. But when we are allowed to leave camp we go to the local bars and restaurants a lot. And walmart! That's a major! We LOVE it! On days off we either go to the malls or just stay at local hotels all day and play.

One of my co-workers had to call our executive director from the police station at 2 am (our curfew is 1230 and he was not off that night)
I can only imagine if our camp had an arcade. The kids would go nuts over it! :P I'd have fun with it too. What games does it have?

Driving games USA, pac man, A football game, a jet flying game, mortel combat, space age and a jutbox
Sounds like fun. Too bad our camp would never get them. Oh well. :(

We get two hours off a day, except for when we have our night off (6pm to 8am/first activity, once a week). We also get a 24 hour break (except it's never really a full 24 hours... ) after campers leave on Saturday until our staff meeting on Sunday. We're allowed to leave camp on any break (I couldn't imagine not being able to leave camp on my breaks!), but we do have to sign out. On shorter breaks, most staff hang out in the staff house, where we have a TV (but no reception, so we just watch movies), a computer with dial-up internet (woohoo!), a small kitchen and a LOT of beds for catching up on sleep... or we go into town - it only takes about 10 minutes to drive - and hang out there (there's a library, starbucks, a pizza place and a grocery store... yay!). On longer breaks, a lot of people go home, some stay at camp and just hang out. Longer breaks also mean we can go to Target (which is too far away to go there on short breaks), or to the bar in the tinytiny town close to camp... I mostly like hanging out in the staff house, though. I've gone home with people on weekend breaks before, but I've found that unless they're really good friends of mine, I feel kind of out of place.

I think it is so funny that so many camps are out in the middle of nowhere making target or wal-mart the "hang out" place. it was so funny being with the internationals this year with their first trip to the store(s).

We don't have a Wal-Mart or Target near us... Closest Wal-Mart 30 miles away in Falmouth (on Cape) or 32 miles from camp in Wareham (off Cape). Let's not even think of the closest Target...
We go to K-Mart. Which is 25 minutes from camp. :) I never appreciated K-Mart until this year.

The town nearest to us has a Dairy Queen, a dollar store, a grocery store, and an Ampride with a pizza place and Taco Bell inside. We really don't leave on breaks though unless we really need something from town. Everyone takes naps in the staff lounge or swims during their breaks

we go to a walmart about 20 mins away in honesdale, pa. its convenient b/c there is a pretty big shopping center w/a good italian restaurant, movie theather, kmart, dollar store, etc. and a ton of fast food places- mcdonalds, wendys, and dunkin donuts right there too. there's also a gas station and stuff. we go to honesdale on a lot of our nights off and on our day off late in the afternoon to have dinner before we go back to camp to shower.

Oooh. Dollar stores. I have not managed to locate ONE dollar store on the Cape. I really don't think they exist. Which means, when we need more dish rags or pot holders or matches, I get them when I go home on the weekends. No dollar stores... Bah to the Cape.

I'm surprised how little time off some of you get. We get 2 hours off each day plus from when our kids are in bed until Curfew at 12:30. You're on one night a week usually, but sometimes not at all. We also get four hours off on Thursdays to get our paperwork finished so it can be turned in by noon on Friday.
As for what we do... staff office/lounge. We have 2 of them. Both have wireless internet so staff with laptops can hook up and there are 2 computers in each office. We have a phone too, but it's not for personal uses unless it's like a 2 minute conversation. The lounge is quite awful so we sometimes go get ice cream, go to the grocery, sit at the local park, go to an empty area of camp and just hang out, or nap if the kids aren't in the cabins.
At night we're not allowed to leave camp, so we hang out in the staff offices or the dining halls. The left over food is given away each night while the kitchen crew cleans out the fridge.

It is so weird that everyone gets so much time off at night. It is kind of discouraged for us to leave our units at night. Number one night is a hard time for homesickness for a lot of campers and it really isn't fair to leave one staff member to deal with all of that. Number two if you take all your time off at night that's less time you get to sleep and the more tired you'll be. Super tired staff members are way more likely to lose patience with a camper than fully rested ones.

yeah we have a bojangles about 10 minutes or less away...but im not a huge fan of it.
I know what you mean kiwicrb...last year we had to be back in the cabins by 12:00. and really it was before then cuz i was outside the cabin one time (like right outside the door) and it was around 11:45 and i was talking to one of the other staff members and the assistent director told us it was time to be in our cabins. Anyways with three staff to most cabins each person got around a 30 minute break at night (only one staff from each cabin could be away at one time). Those times were new this year because last year there were problems with staff staying out really late and so other staff couldnt take their breaks and then the staff who stayed out late being tired. Also we have never been allowed to leave camp at night except if it is our night off which last from 6 till 9:30. I dunno what i would do if i had a lot of time off...rather at night or during the day!
