G'day! I work at a camp in Australia and have become very interested in the power of art in opening children's eyes to the natural environment. So much so that I am applying for a study grant to travel overseas and visit camps where "art in nature" takes place so I can learn more. I hope to be travelling September/October 2008. I have put in a search on google but found very little specifically. Any help re. places/programs to visit would be most welcome. :)

not sure I can help you other than to suggest that you travel earlier in the year because in my experience the majority of camps opperate from june - aug - during the school holidays. You may be find what you are looking for at girl and boy scout camps, 4H and YMCA camps.

Thanks Smudge for the timing advice. I was thinking of this time because there is a certain window available as part of the grant and I thought I might be able to coincide with the NAAEE Conference in North America if I was over there at that time. I notice you are in Europe and I certainly have not narrowed my field at all yet. Just want to be where good things are happening with Art & Nature.

Definately better going to the USA - you could always see if you could spend the summer working a camp in the USA - there are several programs that place people at camps, and organise the visa etc, for a relatively small amount of money (I use camp america and have done for 5 years) and if you organised your placement yourself you could find a camp that does the kind of thing you are interested in and that way you would experience it first hand.

Hey Wambangalang,
There are loads of camps that do environmental art in their outdoor ed programs that operate during the school year. Usually the people who teach there are university graduates and have fantastic experiences to draw from. Check out OutdoorEd.com for camps with OE programs. Another one is ecojobs.com and click on the environmental education section. In Ohio a camp that does terrif env art work is the Cuyahoga Valley EE Center in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Teton Science School in the beautiful Grand Tetons does wild stuff too.

Thanks ph,
Thinking about my timing I suppose I would be pretty lucky to coincide my trip with a day the Outdoor Ed Centre happens to be doing environmental art! Maybe what I should be looking for is a centre that is an Arts camp, running art activities as their major activity. I'm not sure if these even exist! Anyone have any ideas??

I know if you search you can find plenty of arts centered camps....just depends what your looking for... I guess trick is to find the ones that fit the project your working on.
