Off time activities?

I read, check my emails, swim or boat if I can, do crafts, make secret buddy gifts or write letters home, call home, do laundry and generally hide from the campers and the rest of they unit so that I don't get roped into working on my time off.In terms of books I would recommemd "Camp" by Micheal Eisner, the Lord of the Rings books, Chicken Soup for the soul (its about time they brought out on for the camp counsellors soul) and Harry Potter - the new one is coming out while we are at camp.

I wish they did make a camp counselor's soul chicken soup book, Smudge! That would be soo good!
I usually sleep, shower, laundry, and, like Smudge said, try not to get noticed so I have to work! Sometimes just sitting in your cabin in the quiet is nice, too. I have a ton of school work this summer so maybe I'll try to do some of that.

Well for us our breaks come once a week with a 5 hour break (5-10 PM)and all the other days are 2 hour breaks (10-12 PM). On the 5-10 we are allowed to leave camp and so we do, going to a restaurant and walking around stores, just finding things to occupy yourself. From the 10-12 we do whatever we want. Includes sitting around talking, night biking (boy is that fun), and sling shotting things haha.

Our time off varies from day to day - we have 1 6hr block, 2 3hr blocks and the rest are 2hr blocks - in the 2 hour blocks we usually hang out on camp - showering, doing laundry, going out on the lake and hanging out in the staff house. On the longer ones we will usually go off camp for food! and shopping and all sorts of fun stuff!

i dunno about you but my camp staff isn't realy that innocent as it seems everywhere else.
break time hour after lunch, hourbefore dinner(sometimes), done planned activities by like 9
so about 80% of the staff smokes, many of them underage, are chain smoking in their hour breaks at meals, otherwise at those times we sit under my tent and hang out, reading is big towards the end of the season.
at nights plenty more cigarettes, this year we had a hooka, hang out more, oh and the essential wawa(convience store) trip, sometimes some poker.
nights off could get crazy
the tamest was go out to eat usually cheap sitdown, wal-mart/target, then a movie, then maybe waffle house at like 2am after the movie. sometimes they become crazy like setting out to go to 3 Wawas in 3 different states and not get back 5:30 the next morning smelling of vomit, sweat, and smoke

I'm really surprised that smoking is allowed at your camp.

Almost all of the camps that I have worked at have had designated smoking areas for staff well away from where the campers could see them. But we certainly were allowed to come back to camp after a night off smelling of cigarettes, and we had to be fit to work when we woke the kids up at 7am which kinda ruled out being off camp until 5am!

My camp has an 11pm curfew for people staying on camp on nights off.

I've actually created a little manual that stays in the camp office that has anything to do around town, information, prices, location, phone numbers etc. It has everything from libraries to theatres to restaurants to malls. It's especially helpful for the out of town folks on their day off.

I suggested this at my camp but they never did anything about it. And the rough guide to the USA that I donated to camp in 07 had disappeared by the time the summer season of 08 - I wasnt very impressed!

Yea, our's is midnight. If you're not back by then, you better find somewhere else to spend the night and be back by the time the kids get up in the morning.

About 2 miles away is my parent's cabin that borders the camp's property. If I'm feeling froggy I'll hop on down and open it up. I usually invite a few counselors and we chat and watch a bit of TV, and maybe a movie. To drive there you have to drive all the way around the lake, which is 7 miles. And besides, walking it is so much more fun.
