Depends on your camp. Ours asks the girls to swim on lap the length of the swimming area nad tread for a few minuts.

That being said, we've had girls and staff that can't swim - and that's okay. With staff, they are put in a non-swimming position for emergencies (most are anyway if they aren't guards) and our lifeguards remain very aware of who can't swim when they are down there.

Yes, at the camp I worked at even the staff needs to take a swim test so the lifeguards know their swimming abilities. Just like the tests that the kids take there are 3 levels, one for non-swimmers, beginners and skilled swimmers.

The non swimmers (White) has to attempt to: Float, blow bubbles, submerge body, kick with a kickboard.

The beginners (Red): Swim one length on front, one length on back and tread water for 30 seconds.

Skilled (Blue): Swims one lap on front, one lap on back and treads for 2 minutes.

If you are not a swimmer it's no big deals because we always need staff in the shallow end playing with the nonswimmers!

Staff had to take a swim evaluation during pre camp at my camp, just so the lifegaurd knows everyones abilitys. They don't need to have to worry about the staff when they are watching the campers.

Usually, most of our counselors are also certified as lifeguards, so we know their swimming level. If we had a counselor who couldn't swim, they would either have a non-swimming job or be assigned to the shallow end during pool time. It really wouldn't be a big deal if you couldn't swim.

Our campers have to swim 2 laps and tread water for a couple of minutes.

our counselors don't have to take a swim test, when counselors are down at the waterfront there are lifeguards everywhere and general counselors spot in shallow water w/poles, there is no reason that a counselor who can't swim would have to go into the water.

our youngest/new campers take 3 swim tests and the older/returning campers take 2:

-the first is a 4 lap test in our small crib which is 3 feet deep (for the little/new ones)
-the next one is a 6 lap test in our large crib (about 5 feet deep and longer than the small one)
-the 3rd one is a 24 lap test in deep water.

by the end of the summer, most campers have passed all 3 tests but there are always some who still have to swim in the 4 and the 6 lap cribs.

We don't have to do swim tests. If a counselor couldn't swim, they would make their Sr. counselor aware of this, and they wouldn't have to go in the pool. There's always a few campers who, for medical reasons, don't wish to swim (so the counselor who doesn't want to swim can chill on the deck with them!).

Most of our campers either swim with a counselor (the counselor holding them), or with a lifejacket on. They don't have to do a swim test. There's typically no more than 20 kids in the pool, with 5 lifeguards, plus about 10 counselors (who usually do not have LG quals). The ratio is pretty good. ;)

our pool is 4 feet deep. We work with younger camps so all of them take a swim test of one lap to make sure they can swim. most of our campers can touch the bottom.

Our swim test consists of the following:
Swim the width of the pool and back without touching the bottom
Tread water for about 1.5 minutes

Staff is not required to take a swim test. A counselor personally knows his or her limits as far as swimming. If they hang out on the side of the pool or just stay in the shallow end, it's up to them.
