How do you think parents and their kids would react if camps like the ones on the US started popping up all over the countryside? (with heated pools of course!)

Do you thinks parents would let their kids go for 7 weeks?

Do you thinks they would be willing to pay the same/equivilent as the US camps cost?

Why do you think the tradition of camp did not take off in the UK at the same time it did in the US?

Would you like to open and run one here?

I know things like Parents Get Lost (PGL) http://www.pgl.co.uk/online/ run on a smaller and shorter scale and Guides and Scouts have always camped but again smaller and shorter.

What are your thoughts?

I went to PGL when i was about 11. I found it fun but the only problem was it IS IN THE UK!
AND IN THE UK IT IS COLD!
AND BEING IN A LAKE WHEN YOU'RE SHIVVERING COS ITS SOO COLD IS NOT FUN!

Just one of the things that kinda ruined my first camp experience is the typical british weather. And YES YES America can have its fair share of bad weather too, just with the UK its just so annoying!

Just my thoughts...

I went to a camp called Sandsend at believe it or not Sandsend ;) (in England) It only lasted 10 days and was End of July-start August time! I had great fun there and the weather was fine the 3 days I went there!
Every other evening there was a themed thing going on so we had a Barn dance, Party, and something that I loved which was similar to a counsellor hunt!
The staff would be dressed up or blending in on the public beach nearby and we had to go around in small groups asking people we thought were staff a daft question! If they answered it in the way we were forewarned then they gave us a letter! we had to collect so many letters that spellt the meeting spot at the end! One year the question was "Has your steeple fallen off?" and it was funny when we asked random funny dressed people!

I think that camp is still running, not sure but I havnt heard of many others!

I'm not sure about opening and running one it seems an awful lot of work and I admire all those that have :)

Thanks for your post Jenny.

Dont get me wrong, some of the activities i did at camp were fun.
Archery, quad biking, abseiling.
Just the week was ruined by the water activities (apart from kayaking which i LOVED but they even managed to ruin that by making us tip over at the end of the session)

Scriptured Union ( su) round hundred of camps across the uk throught the summer they cost prob equivalant to waht a usa camp costs but finacial help is avaible if needed. They generally run for one week at a time and can hav ediffrent intrest ie sailing, study or just be a general camp i went to these camps from age10- 15 and loved them and then even became a councellor at one for one year.

i went to an SU weekend camp. Guess what? it rained! lol
Most of the activities were indoors, i think for that very reason!
