View Full Version : what should i expect?

My first year as a camp counselor will be this summer. what should i expect? i'll be working at a day camp. not sure if that makes a difference. any help would be great.

it depends on what kind of day camp you'll be working at...some operate like sleepaway camps just without the sleeping, others are for more specific things or a specialty or cater to certain types of children. if you're working at a regular day camp similar to a sleepaway camp...it will be really fun. you'll get to try a lot of new things and meet really cute kids and not to mention getting to know their parents, you'll see why the kids are the way they are lol, not something you get to do at a sleepaway camp all the time. it will be hard work though, since your kids will mostly be younger and need help getting changed for swim, tying shoes, etc. what camp are you working at, just curious?

Not necessarily. Well, at least not at my camp. Tying shoes I did have to do, but the kids I had didn't need help getting changed. It depends on the age (and the kid).

What age do you think is when the kids don't need help getting changed anymore?

I've never worked with younger kids so I'm not sure exactly. My guess would be 5 or 6. It also depends on the kid. Some kids become more independent earlier than others.

If anyone else has different opinions feel free to list them because mine is merely a guess.

You also need to see what kind of kids your camp is going to have. i.e. speical needs! But your safe not needing to help kids change at age 6.

Expect to have some the hardest times of your life and some of the absolute best times of your life all in one summer!!
